For a family or a small group, the Family Bungalow accommodates up to four people with two single beds and a king-size bed. Ground-floor units make arrival and departure easier, while private entrances keep the room feeling like its own little base. There are also compact twin and queen rooms with a shared bathroom, suited to travellers who would rather keep the room simple and spend their time outside.

The practical details are well matched to a warm island. Bungalows have a fan, hot shower, mosquito net, clothes rack and drying rack, with private bathrooms in the bungalow accommodation and balconies in the room range. A seating area gives you somewhere to land with a book or a bottle of water, and daily housekeeping takes care of the less glamorous part of returning sandy and salt-covered.

The restaurant works with Western and Indonesian dishes prepared in a traditional way, using local products. That gives you a choice between familiar food and the more useful holiday habit of eating what the island does well. Vegetarian dishes are available, and the breakfast selection covers continental, Asian, halal, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, with local specialities and fresh fruit.

Breakfast is included in the stay, and breakfast to go is available when the day's plans start before the dining room feels properly awake. There is one bar, as well as an on-site coffee house, so you can move from morning coffee to an evening drink without turning dinner into a logistical exercise. The restaurant also caters for special diets on request, including dairy-free options.

The private beach is the obvious place to begin: white sand, palm trees and direct access to the sea. You can walk straight into the water for a snorkel on the reef in front of Alam Kita, or simply claim a patch of shade and let the day become less ambitious. Kayaks, water-sports equipment and boat excursions are available on site, while fishing and walking tours offer alternatives when you have had enough saltwater for one day.

The wellness side is more developed than a token treatment room. You can book a traditional Indonesian massage, a healing session or an Access Bars® treatment, then use the spa lounge as a place to sit quietly rather than rush straight back into activity. Yoga classes and guided meditation take place in the Pendopo, close enough to the beach for the wind and waves to do some of the atmosphere-building themselves.

There is plenty to occupy a non-diving day without turning it into a military operation: island-hopping and snorkelling trips, a hike to a hidden waterfall, a visit to release turtles at a sanctuary, Indonesian cooking classes, baby-coral planting and stargazing at the observatory. Scooter and car hire are available, and the programme also includes hypnosis sessions and new- or full-moon ceremonies. Board games, puzzles and outdoor play equipment keep the less water-focused members of a family occupied.

Karimunjawa can be reached by boat from Jepara or by a small aircraft from Semarang. Alam Kita can help you arrange the necessary tickets, and an airport shuttle is available from Kemujan Airport. Transfers can also be arranged from the harbour, with car hire available if you want to explore the island under your own steam. The journey needs planning; this is an island stay, not a hotel you reach by simply turning off the main road.

Check-in runs from 12:00 to 15:00 and check-out from 06:00 to 11:00. Private and express check-in and check-out are available, alongside luggage storage and a tour desk. Free public parking is available on site, Wi-Fi is available in the public areas, and laundry can deal with the inevitable accumulation of damp swimwear and island dust. Packed lunches are available for days spent away from the restaurant, and pets are welcome on request.

The hotel ’s stated environmental aim is to become electronically self-sufficient through solar panels. The approach is practical rather than decorative: the resort is working towards generating its own electricity while keeping the property small and close to its natural surroundings.

You can also take part in baby-coral planting, linking the stay directly to the reef in front of the beach. It is a concrete activity to choose when you want your time on land to have something to do with the underwater world, without turning the evening into a lecture.
