Siladen Resort & Spa is a boutique beachfront dive resort for you if the sea is the main event and a comfortable villa, a proper meal and a quiet drink still matter afterwards. It sits on a tropical island in the heart of Bunaken National Marine Park, with the beach directly outside and a saltwater pool at the centre of the resort. The diving is built into the place, rather than bolted on as an afterthought.

You are also well served if English matters at check-in, at the table or when arranging the next day. The hotel team speaks English, Indonesian, Italian, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese and Japanese, while the management works in English. That is a useful spread when your brain is still half underwater and the conversation involves boats, meals or tomorrow's departure.

The atmosphere stays easy-going and practical: a private terrace, a book from the library, a swim, then the Lounge Bar a few steps from the beach. Families are welcome, and couples have the option of keeping the evening simple or arranging something more private on the sand.

Your address is Bunaken, Indonesia, on Pulau Siladen rather than in Manado itself. The resort faces a 600-metre white-sand beach, with a fringing reef and views towards Manado Tua volcano. Bunaken National Park surrounds the setting, so the geography here is marine first, mainland second.

Siladen Beach is directly beside the resort. Pangalisang Beach lies about 2.1 miles away and Liang Beach about 2.4 miles away, although you will already have a long stretch of sand in front of your villa. This is an island stay, with the national park as your immediate neighbour and the reef as the local feature that does not need an introduction.

Getting there is part of the journey. From Sam Ratulangi Airport in Manado, allow around 90 minutes in total: approximately 45 minutes by car to Wori Jetty, followed by a 45-minute boat ride to Siladen. The sea has the final word on timing, as weather and tides can affect the transfer.

The accommodation is arranged as private tropical-style villas with wooden or parquet flooring, full air conditioning and a terrace or balcony. A garden-view villa keeps things straightforward for a couple who would rather spend the day outside, while a Beach Front Villa puts the shoreline closer to your first coffee and your last look at the water. The Two-Bedroom Villa is the sensible choice when you are travelling as a family or with friends and want two separate sleeping areas and two bathrooms.

Inside, you get a super-king-size bed in the couple-oriented villas, a seating area, a desk, satellite television and a minibar. The minibar is useful for keeping a drink ready when you return warm, salty and no longer interested in small talk. An electric kettle and tea or coffee facilities cover the first drink of the day without requiring a trip across the resort.

The private bathrooms are semi-open and include a shower, bidet, hairdryer, towels and toiletries. Air conditioning handles the tropical heat, while the mosquito net adds a sensible layer of protection at night. Daily housekeeping, a private entrance and a drying rack for clothing keep the practical business of a dive holiday from taking over the terrace.

The Beringin Tree Restaurant looks over the beach and pool, with a covered terrace that gives you somewhere to sit without turning lunch into a sunbathing exercise. Its cooking brings together Indonesian, Asian fusion, Italian and international influences, with European and Mediterranean touches in the broader menu. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are available, alongside special-diet menus on request.

Breakfast is served as a buffet, with continental, Italian, vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free and American choices. That gives you room to build either a sensible pre-dive plate or the larger version required when the morning includes two dives. During the dry season, beach barbecues become a regular feature, and private beach dinners can be arranged for a more deliberate evening.

There is one named bar: the Lounge Bar, a lobby bar close to the beach. It covers cocktails, imported wines and champagnes, beers, soft drinks and bar snacks, while tea, coffee, cookies and pastries are available during the day. A private romantic dinner or a meal in the comfort of your villa is also possible when you want the evening to involve fewer people than fish identification usually does.

The freeform outdoor saltwater pool sits beside the restaurant, reception and Lounge Bar, overlooking the beach. Sun loungers, umbrellas, beach towels and outdoor furniture make it easy for you to move from the water to a shaded seat with a book, a drink or the respectable post-dive activity of staring into the middle distance. The private beach adds another 600 metres of sand, with loungers, parasols and showers.

For a quieter reset, The Spa at Siladen offers massage, aromatherapy, body scrubs, body rituals and traditional treatments using natural ingredients and oils prepared in Bali. It opens from 09:00 to 21:30, which is late enough to fit around a full day on the water. Weekly yoga classes take place in the Tree House, an open lounge area on the beach.

There is also billiards, live music and water sports, including snorkelling, night snorkelling, fishing and boat excursions. Away from the water, you can join an Indonesian cooking class, attend presentations about marine life, observe local wildlife or visit Woloan village on a Minahasan excursion. The tour desk and concierge can help arrange sightseeing, so you are not limited to the route between villa, restaurant and shore.

Airport transfers can be arranged by the resort, with the journey combining a car transfer from Sam Ratulangi Airport to Wori Jetty and a boat crossing to Pulau Siladen. A member of the team welcomes you at the airport. Reserve the transfer through the resort and allow extra flexibility around the weather and tides rather than planning your arrival down to the last minute.

Check-in starts from 14:00 and check-out runs until 10:30. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, and the resort needs your expected arrival time in advance. Payment before arrival is made by bank transfer, with the property contacting you afterwards with the instructions.

Luggage storage, a tour desk, currency exchange, concierge assistance, laundry and daily housekeeping are available. WiFi is free throughout the resort, and an infirmary is on site with a doctor available on request. Children of any age are welcome; extra beds are available on request for guests aged 12 and over, while cots depend on the accommodation selected.

The resort's environmental work is tied to the island and the marine park rather than reduced to a label on the wall. Its turtle conservation programme has operated since 2004 with support for The Turtle Foundation, while regular beach clean-ups, mooring buoys and restrictions on navigation practices help protect the surrounding coral.

Single-use plastic is reduced through reusable straws, reusable water bottles and large water dispensers, with drinks served in recyclable cans or glass. Local sourcing, composting, waste separation and recycling form part of the daily operation, alongside a partnership with the No-Trash Triangle Initiative. Desalination, rainwater collection and recovery of drainage water from air-conditioning systems support the resort's freshwater supply and garden irrigation.

The programme also reaches beyond the shoreline, with support for local children, employment from Siladen and nearby islands, annual vaccination and sterilisation of stray animals, and activities linked to PADI Project AWARE and World Ocean Day.
