Arjuna Homestay is a 16-room guesthouse in Pemuteran, built around the practical pleasures of a diving stay: somewhere to sleep in air-conditioned comfort, a pool for the afternoon, and a restaurant that does not require another journey when you are hungry. The setting looks towards the pool, garden and mountains, with the main road only 200 metres away.

The atmosphere is small-scale rather than resort-sized. You have a terrace, outdoor seating, a shared lounge and a garden, with the option of spending the evening on site or wandering into Pemuteran. The website is available in English and French.

Couples can keep things simple with a double room and dinner close at hand. Families have larger room layouts, including options for three or four people. The place also works for divers who want Menjangan within reach without paying for a large, elaborate property full of facilities they will barely use.

The address is on Jalan Arjuna in Pemuteran, in northern Bali. Pemuteran Beach is roughly 500 metres away, close enough for a walk rather than a full transport operation. The guesthouse sits near the main road but not on it, with rooms looking towards the garden, pool or mountains.

This part of Bali is a useful base for combining diving with dry-land days. Gunung Bratan is about 1 mile away, Pulaki Temple about 1.5 miles, and West Bali National Park about 7 miles. Menjangan Island is around a 20-minute drive, making the marine park the obvious focus for a diving itinerary.

Food and coffee are close by too. La Terrasse is about 100 feet away, while Selini Cafe & Bakery is roughly 300 metres from the guesthouse. You are not stranded in a compound, but neither do you need to cross half of Pemuteran for every meal.

The rooms are bright and airy, with air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a desk and a seating area. That combination matters in Pemuteran: the fan can keep the air moving, while the air conditioning gives you a cooler reset when the day has involved heat, salt and a wetsuit. A mosquito net, wardrobe, clothes rack and drying rack keep the basic business of unpacking fairly straightforward.

For two people, choose between a king-size double room and a twin room according to how you prefer to sleep. The family rooms make more sense when three or four people are travelling together, with a single bed or bunk bed alongside the larger bed. The family layouts are the practical choice for parents travelling with children, rather than trying to turn a couple's room into a storage puzzle.

Views are towards the garden or pool, and the accommodation description also gives balconies or terraces to the rooms, with mountain views from the upper floor. Outdoor furniture and a sun terrace provide somewhere to sit without retreating to the bed. Soundproof rooms are available, while the seating area and desk give you a little space to read, sort photographs or deal with the day's accumulated messages.

The property welcomes children of all ages. Cots and extra beds can be requested, subject to the selected room and availability. A family room is therefore worth choosing early if you want everyone to have a proper bed rather than an improvised arrangement.

La Terrasse is the on-site restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner on its terrace. The kitchen moves between French, western, Indonesian and local dishes, so the menu can cover both familiar food and the point of travelling to Bali in the first place. The chef also presents a different Balinese speciality in the evening, giving dinner a little more direction than simply ordering whatever is quickest.

Breakfast is included and can be continental, Asian, vegetarian, halal, gluten-free or buffet-style. Continental options include toast or bread with eggs, bacon or sausages, as well as jam, honey and butter. The local alternative is nasi or mie goreng with vegetables, egg and chicken. Fruit, juice, tea and coffee complete the start of the day.

Breakfast begins at 7.00, and it can be served on the restaurant terrace, with mountain views, or in your room. Snacks are available throughout the day, which is precisely the sort of arrangement that earns its keep on a diving holiday: you can eat something small without committing to a full meal at the wrong moment. There is also a bar and a coffee house on site, although the property does not present a separate bar programme.

The outdoor swimming pool is the obvious place to land between excursions, with sun loungers, pool towels and a separate children's pool. A garden, terrace and sun terrace provide alternatives when sitting in water has stopped being entertaining. There is also a spa and wellness area with massage, spa facilities and a relaxation lounge, which is a sensible answer to shoulders that have spent the day carrying equipment.

Yoga classes are available on site. For something more active, the guesthouse can arrange or facilitate local activities including hiking, cycling, horse riding, fishing and cultural visits. Snorkelling and water sports are also available in the area, while the pool remains the less complicated option when you have already had enough logistics for one day.

Dry-land excursions range from West Bali National Park walks and wildlife outings to visits involving forest, mangrove and savannah. Other possibilities include a sunset at Bali Tower, the Atlas Pearl Culture visit, mountain days with waterfalls, coffee plantations, rice fields and hot springs, and longer trips towards Java. Scooter hire and a driver-guide service make these outings easier to organise without turning the reception desk into a second job.

Check-in starts at 14.00 and check-out runs until 11.00. A 24-hour front desk, private or express check-in and check-out, luggage storage and concierge service cover the awkward edges of travel days. That is useful if your transport and your room do not line up neatly, particularly when a dive schedule is involved.

The guesthouse has free Wi-Fi throughout, secure on-site parking and room service. Laundry and ironing services are available, as is car hire. An airport shuttle can be arranged with the property. Ngurah Rai International Airport is about a four-hour drive from Pemuteran; Banyuwangi International Airport is roughly 36 miles away by road, with a driving time of about 1 hour 35 minutes.
