Eel Garden – Menjangan: wall diving among Bali's finest corals

Located off the northwest side of Menjangan Island, Eel Garden presents itself as a captivating wall dive that plunges from shallow reefs into deeper waters. Your descent begins amidst an explosion of colour, where the corals are often cited as the healthiest and most diverse you’ll find around the island. This site is defined by its sheer face, offering a dynamic profile that changes as you explore its various nooks and crannies.

As you drop alongside the wall, the topography unfolds with gentle slopes giving way to more dramatic lines. The dive invites you to explore the intricate reef structure, where each overhang and crevice can reveal resident marine life. The natural light filters beautifully through the upper reaches, illuminating the vibrant hues of the corals before fading into the deeper blues of the open water.

True to its name, pockets of white sand at various depths host thriving colonies of garden eels, swaying in unison as they filter feed. These fascinating creatures often signal the transition from the hard coral wall to softer, sandy bottoms, providing a unique behavioural spectacle. Keep an eye out for longnose hawkfish (Oxycirrhites typus), perched delicately among the gorgonians, their distinctive profiles a highlight against the coral backdrop.

The intricate reef system here provides a haven for a variety of smaller, stealthier creatures. Patient observation can reward you with sightings of pygmy seahorses (Hippocampus bargibanti) camouflaged among their gorgonian hosts. Octopus often reveal themselves from their hiding spots with a subtle change in texture or colour, adding another layer of discovery to your exploration of the wall's many faces.

In the deeper sections and along the wall face, you may encounter reef sharks patrolling the perimeter, adding an element of pelagic excitement to the dive. The presence of turtles gliding past is a common sight, contributing to the serene feeling of the dive. Further exploration can also reveal nudibranchs in various forms and colours, often found meticulously grazing on sponges and hydroids.
