Depan Kampung, Bunaken: Sulawesi's turtle haven reef

Depan Kampung, which translates to 'in front of the village' in Indonesian, sits on the southeastern side of Bunaken Island, directly offshore from Bunaken village. This site presents a gently sloping reef system, forming a natural continuation of the extensive Lekuan dive area. The topography is straightforward, an expansive slope dropping from the shallow reef, making it an accessible dive that gradually reveals more life as you move along its contours. You’ll find the current here is typically manageable, allowing for a comfortable drift along the reef’s edge.

As you descend, the reef unfolds with a profusion of hard and soft corals, providing ample hiding spots and feeding grounds for a variety of smaller reef inhabitants. Keep your eyes tuned to the reef itself; while the site is known for larger animals, the macro life here thrives. You’ll be able to work your way along the slope, observing the intricate ecosystems built within the coral structures. This slope allows for varied depth profiles, catering to different air consumption rates and experience levels, ensuring a thorough exploration tailored to your comfort.

The site truly distinguishes itself with its turtle population. Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) are a common sight, often seen grazing on the corals or resting under ledges. While turtles are a highlight, Depan Kampung also draws in larger pelagic species, particularly below the 20-meter mark. Schooling tuna (Thunnus spp.), including yellowfin (Thunnus albacares) or dogtooth (Gymnosarda unicolor), are also a regular presence, especially when currents bring nutrient-rich water past the reef. These larger animals are typically seen cruising the deeper section of the slope, requiring attention to the blue water beyond the reef.
