You come here for a small solar-powered lodge on the northern shore of Mansuar, where the bungalows sit beside a protected lagoon and the house reef starts at the water's edge. This is a place for divers and snorkellers who would rather spend the evening watching the tide than queuing for a buffet in a large resort. The setting does the talking, without needing a loudspeaker.

The atmosphere is straightforward and close to the sea. You have a garden, coconut trees, a spacious terrace and views across the Dampier Strait, with the possibility of spotting whales from the elevated dining area. The lodge also suits couples particularly well, with large beds, private outdoor space and the sort of immediate access to the water that makes a second snorkel tempting even when the first one was meant to be the last.

English is spoken by the hotel team, so you can deal directly with the people looking after your stay.

The nearest listed restaurants and coffee shops are in the Waisai area, around 18 miles away, while Arborek Island Beach is about 6 miles away. That distance is less a daily inconvenience than a useful warning: this is an island lodge, so the restaurant on site becomes part of the rhythm of your stay.

Domine Eduard Osok Airport is about 51 miles away. The journey involves a boat transfer rather than a quick road hop, and the lodge arranges pickups from Mansuar, Kri and the southern side of Gam.

The accommodation is built around the water and the view. Choose a sea-view room if the first thing you want to see is the Dampier Strait, or take a room with a terrace if having your own outdoor place to sit matters more than facing the water directly. The rooms are designed for two, with an extra-large double bed, so the natural fit is a couple rather than a group trying to negotiate luggage and sleeping arrangements like a badly planned surface interval.

Private and shared bathroom arrangements are available across the accommodation. Some rooms have a private external bathroom, and the bungalows also have outdoor showers with hot water. Balconies or terraces give you somewhere to sit outside, while the mosquito net is a practical detail in a tropical setting. Parquet floors, linen and towels keep the interiors simple rather than fussy.

The water bungalows use folding doors for an open view, while beach bungalows have sliding doors. Nyande Restaurant sits slightly back from the beach among coconut trees, in an elevated dining area looking across the Dampier Strait. It serves local Indonesian cuisine, with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free choices available. The setting is part of the meal: you can look over the water while eating rather than at a wall decorated with enlarged photographs of food.

Breakfast is included and served as a buffet from 7am, with pancakes and fresh fruit. Lunch follows at 1pm, afternoon cake arrives at 4pm, and dinner is served at 7pm. Those timings are useful for divers: breakfast is early enough to support a morning departure, while the afternoon cake gives you something more substantial than optimism before the evening meal.

There is no bar listed, but tea and coffee-making facilities are available in the restaurant. Drinking water is available throughout the day, with ice on request, and WiFi is available there as well. Packed lunches can also be prepared for days spent away from the lodge.

The lagoon is the main non-diving activity, and it starts directly from the bungalows. You can swim or snorkel on the house reef, then use the freshwater outdoor shower before settling on a terrace or in a hammock. There is no need to turn a quiet afternoon into a timetable: the water, the garden and the view provide enough structure for anyone who has already spent the morning counting bubbles.

Snorkelling trips and boat excursions are available, including trips to Piaynemo. Wildlife viewing is another reason to look up from the water. Small parrots, nectar-drinking bats and flying squirrels are found around the lodge, while the large tree beside the two-room beach bungalow attracts wildlife during the day and evening.

After dark, phosphorescence can be visible in the shallows around the water bungalows. It is a small detail, but a good one: the evening entertainment is occasionally produced by the lagoon itself, with no animation team required.

Arrival takes planning. Boat transfers to and from the guest house are available, with pickups from Mansuar, Kri and the southern side of Gam. You should give the lodge your expected arrival time, as check-in runs from noon to 6pm and check-out from 7am to 11am. A photo ID and credit card are required at check-in.

The airport connection is to Domine Eduard Osok Airport, about 51 miles away, followed by the boat transfer to the lodge. This is not a property you reach by simply hiring a car at the terminal. The practical approach is to arrange the boat connection with the lodge before travelling and to allow the journey its proper place in the itinerary.

Daily housekeeping, free WiFi throughout the property and laundry are available. Laundry is an extra service, while packed lunches can be arranged for excursions. Children are not allowed, and cots and extra beds are not available, so the accommodation is best planned around adults sharing the existing beds. Parties and pets are not accepted.

Solar power supplies the bungalows and dive centre, including 24-hour power for the accommodation. Small boats are used to reduce environmental impact, while the lodge follows waste-reduction and plastic-free principles. Filtered-water stations allow you to refill bottles rather than rely on disposable ones.

Wastewater is handled through a septic tank and a land-based leach field, keeping toilet waste out of the sea. Diving practices focus on good buoyancy, no contact with coral or marine life, no feeding fish, secured equipment and reef-safe sunscreen.
