Baron Dive

Baron Dive is situated on the island of Panglao in the Bohol archipelago, a region known for its vibrant coral ecosystems and diverse marine life. Established in 2023, the centre has quickly become a hub for those looking to explore the waters of the Philippines through a professional PADI-affiliated programme.

The centre operates with a focus on creating a community of divers, often referred to as the 'Baronies'. Based at the Lotus Resort near Alona Beach, it offers a streamlined experience for those looking to combine their diving with comfortable accommodation.

The team is composed of three experienced PADI instructors—Tommy, Julie, and Ricky—alongside dedicated Divemasters, Rex and Erickson. This ensures a professional level of guidance for all skill levels, from those taking their first breaths underwater to professionals working towards their Divemaster certification.

Communication is straightforward for international divers, as the team speaks both English and Korean. The atmosphere is designed to be convivial and family-oriented, making it easy to settle in and share stories with other divers after a day on the water.

Baron Dive provides a comprehensive range of PADI courses. Beginners can start with the Open Water Diver course, while those looking to expand their skills can progress through Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, and eventually the Divemaster programme.

Specialty training is also available, including the Enriched Air (Nitrox) course, which is highly recommended for the local conditions. The centre also offers EFR (Emergency First Response), DSMB (Deployment of a Surface Marker Buoy), and Scuba Review sessions for those looking to refresh their skills.

The centre operates two bangka-style boats, named Adorable Baron and Baron Julie. These traditional vessels are used for excursions to the local dive sites, including night dives.

Nitrox is available on board, allowing divers to extend their bottom times on many of the local reef sites.

Full equipment hire is available for those not travelling with their own kit. This includes the essentials such as regulators, BCDs, and wetsuits. For night diving, torches are available for hire.

For those using their own dive computers, rental units are also available. The centre's base at the Lotus Resort provides a convenient starting point for your diving day.

The reefs around Panglao are home to a diverse array of tropical fish, including various species of Wrasse (Labridae), Butterflyfish (Chaetodon), and Fusilier (Caesio). You will frequently encounter schools of Anthias (Anthias), Rabbitfish, and Surgeonfish (Acanthuridae) moving across the reef flats.

Larger pelagics and reef residents add to the experience, with sightings of Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), and various species of Moray eel (Muraenidae). It is also possible to see Jack (Carangidae), Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), and Tuna (Thunnus) in the deeper waters.

Macro enthusiasts will find plenty to observe, including colourful nudibranchs, Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), and various species of shrimp (Caridea). Look closely for Ghost pipefish (Solenostomidae), Pygmy seahorse (Hippocampus bargibanti), and different types of frogfish (Antennarius) amongst the corals.

The seabed and reef structures are decorated with a variety of life, including hard corals, soft corals, and Sea fan (Gorgoniidae), providing a complex habitat for species like the Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) and various scorpionfish.

Diving in the Bohol Sea is subject to local weather patterns. During typhoon seasons, wind and swell conditions can affect accessibility to certain dive sites, though the centre continues to operate when conditions allow for safe diving.

Night diving is a regular part of the local diving offering, providing a completely different perspective on the reef's inhabitants.
