Reef Haven Scuba Diving School

Located at Muelle Port in Puerto Galera, Reef Haven Scuba Diving School is a locally owned centre situated at the gateway to some of the Philippines' most significant marine ecosystems. The school operates with an island-style approach, prioritising a relaxed atmosphere alongside a strict commitment to safety and reef protection.

The centre is ideally positioned to access the diverse habitats of the region, ranging from vibrant reef flats to the expansive atolls of the Coral Triangle. Whether you are looking to complete your first certification or are an experienced diver seeking pelagic encounters, the school provides the logistical support needed for a focused diving experience.

The team is composed of experienced PADI instructors dedicated to building confident and competent divers. They place a heavy emphasis on environmental stewardship, frequently organising underwater clean-ups to help protect the local Puerto Galera ecosystem.

As a centre that is majority female-led, Reef Haven offers a particularly welcoming and inclusive environment for female divers. The approach to instruction is flexible, ensuring that training is tailored to the individual while maintaining high safety standards.

Reef Haven offers a comprehensive curriculum of PADI courses catering to every stage of a diver's progression. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Bubblemaker programme, moving through to the Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver certifications.

For those looking to professionalise their skills, the centre provides training for Rescue Diver and Divemaster levels. They also offer the Enriched Air (Nitrox) Diver course to help divers utilise the Nitrox available on-site.

For trips to the Apo Reef Natural Park, the centre utilises the yacht Caribbean Tigress. These excursions are designed for full-day adventures and include meals and refreshments on board.

Beyond these larger trips, the school facilitates both shore dives and boat dives, allowing for a variety of diving styles depending on the site and the conditions of the day.

The marine life around Puerto Galera and Apo Reef is exceptionally diverse. You will encounter large species such as Manta ray (Mobula alfredi), various sharks including hammerhead sharks, grey sharks, and Whitetip reef shark (Triaenodon obesus). Schools of fish are a constant presence, including fusiliers, snappers, jacks (Carangidae), and trevallies.

The reef structures themselves are built from a complex architecture of hard corals (Scleractinia), soft corals (Alcyonacea), and various gorgonians. You will see large sponges, sea fans (Gorgoniidae), and colourful brain corals providing habitat for countless reef fish like butterflyfish, angelfish (Pomacanthidae), and surgeonfish (Acanthuridae).

For macro enthusiasts, the area is a treasure trove. Look closely for nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses (Hippocampus bargibanti), ghost pipefish (Solenostomidae), and various species of shrimp and crabs. Ornate ghost pipefish (Solenostomus paradoxus) and flamboyant cuttlefish are also notable residents of the reef.

The best time to visit the Apo Reef area is during the dry season, from January to April, when conditions are most favourable. During this period, the local ecosystems are at their most accessible for divers of all levels.

While many sites are accessible to a wide range of divers, some locations like Barracuda Hill are better suited to those with Advanced Open Water certification due to the nature of the environment and the activity levels of the marine life.
