Hin Wong Bay, Koh Tao: Boulder Formations and Coral Gardens

Hin Wong Bay is positioned on the eastern side of Koh Tao, offering a distinct underwater landscape compared to the more sheltered western bays. The site is defined by significant granite boulder formations that create a complex topography of passages, swim-throughs, and overhangs. These structures shape the dive, guiding exploration through natural channels and providing numerous hiding spots for marine inhabitants. Descending into the bay, you'll immediately notice the rugged character of the formations, a stark contrast to typical reef gardens, emphasizing a raw, granite environment.

The dive profile within Hin Wong Bay generally ranges from 5 metres down to 18 metres, making it accessible while also offering depth variations for exploration. As you navigate the boulder fields, the light plays through the gaps and over the tops of the formations, illuminating a dense covering of hard corals. These coral growth, particularly staghorn coral, are extensive here, carpeting the granite with life. This rich coral cover supports a high density of small reef fish, moving in schools around the bommies and across the sand patches.

Within the quieter recesses of the bay, particularly over sandy edges near the rock formations, you may encounter various rays. Blue-spotted ribbontail rays (Taeniura lymma) are often seen resting on the soft bottom, partially buried or moving gracefully across the sand. Keep an eye out for these encounters, as they are a regular sight here. Cuttlefish are also present, often camouflaged against the substrate, showcasing their remarkable ability to change texture and colour.

Beyond the smaller reef residents, Hin Wong Bay is also home to larger, migratory species, particularly green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas). These turtles are frequently observed gliding through the water, sometimes resting among the corals or venturing into the deeper sections of the site. Their presence adds another dimension to the dive, providing opportunities to observe these creatures in their natural habitat as they forage or patrol the reef edges.

The conditions at Hin Wong Bay can shift more significantly than those found in the more protected western bays. Surface conditions and visibility are more dependent on local weather patterns, especially wind direction. However, when conditions align, the visibility can be excellent, and the current remains mild, allowing for relaxed exploration of the site's intricate structures and abundant marine life. While not typically a primary training site, it offers a rewarding dive for those seeking a change of scenery from Koh Tao's busier spots, with its unique granite formations offering character not found elsewhere.
