Dropping down on Hin Wong Pinnacle, you'll immediately see why it stands apart from other Koh Tao sites. While the surrounding bay offers shallower options, this is a deep dive, starting around 15 metres and extending to 32 metres at its base. The pinnacle itself is an impressive formation of granite boulders covered in a dense growth of hard corals, soft corals, and particularly, an abundance of sea fans. It’s not just a collection of rocks; it's a living, breathing structure that changes character with depth.
The topography here means you're often moving around large rock formations. On the southern end, these boulders are especially large, creating channels and overhangs that you can explore. These are natural shelters, offering a contrast to the exposed upper sections of the pinnacle. It's in these crevices and under ledges where you start finding the resident marine life that prefers a bit more cover, allowing for closer observations away from the main current.
Current is a consistent factor at Hin Wong Pinnacle. It can vary, but strong currents are frequent, particularly as you move around the more exposed parts of the pinnacle. This isn't a drift dive in the open, but rather a site where you position yourself carefully behind rock formations to observe the faunal activity. These currents bring nutrients, which directly contribute to the prolific coral growth and the density of schooling fish that patrol the reefs.
Look closely in the protected areas and among the dense coral growth, and you'll spot a variety of smaller, often overlooked creatures. Nudibranches are common, moving deliberately across the corals and rocks. You might also find pipefish tucked into the crevices, and on occasion, seahorses can be seen clinging to the fan corals or other sessile invertebrates. This macro life thrives in the micro-shelters created by the complex structure of the pinnacle.
Beyond the macro, the currents also support larger inhabitants. Fusiliers, trevallies (Carangues), and batfish (Platax) often circle above the pinnacle, especially when the current brings in food. Keep an eye out for resident groupers (Mérou) sheltering in the deeper sections. While not a pelagic heavy site in the same vein as some offshore spots, the regular presence of these fish adds to the dynamic of the dive, demonstrating the health of the ecosystem.
Turtles are also frequent visitors to Hin Wong Pinnacle, often seen grazing on algae or resting on the larger coral formations. You'll also encounter titan triggerfish (Baliste Titan) patrolling the reef, and the distinctive Blue-Ringed Angelfish against the vibrant backdrop of purple and pink corals.
