Cassis Calanques Plongee

Cassis Calanques Plongée is situated just 30 metres from the port in the charming town of Cassis, positioned perfectly to access the protected waters of the Parc National des Calanques. This area, located 20km from Marseille, provides some of the most striking Mediterranean diving, characterized by dramatic limestone cliffs and complex underwater topography.

The centre carries a significant local legacy, having been established in 1956. It is famously linked to the history of the region, as it was with this centre that Henri Cosquer discovered the renowned cave at Cap Morgiou at a depth of 36 metres.

The centre is managed by Jean-Marie Sola, an instructor with high-level technical qualifications including SDITDI, Nitrox, and Trimix, alongside his wife Marie. They lead a professional team of state-certified instructors (Brevet d'État) who handle everything from introductory dives to advanced technical training.

The teaching approach covers a vast spectrum of certifications, including PADI, SDI/TDI, NAUI, and the French FFESSM/CMAS systems. Whether you are looking for a relaxed exploration or a rigorous technical course, the team is equipped to manage both recreational and advanced profiles.

The training catalogue is extensive, catering to every level of experience. Beginners can start with the Discover Scuba Diver programme or progress through the FFESSM levels (Niveau 1, 2, and 3) and PADI certifications such as Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water, and Rescue Diver.

For technical divers, the centre offers specialised training in Nitrox (Elementary and Confirmed) and Trimix (Elementary and Confirmed). They also provide advanced rebreather training, including DSD, Air diluent/Helitrox, Trimix, and Hypoxic Trimix courses. Other specialised certifications available include RIFAP, Aquaticus, Tétardo, and Explorator.

The centre operates the Best-Ouan, a fast vedette with a capacity for 29 people. Powered by twin 200cv Volvo engines, the boat is designed to reach the best sites quickly and efficiently.

On board, you will find essential navigation and safety equipment, including a depth sounder, VHF, and GPS. The vessel is equipped with two ascent ladders and carries both oxygen therapy equipment and Nitrox/Trimix gases to support various diving profiles.

The shore-based facilities include dedicated changing rooms and a classroom for theory sessions. The centre is a MARES partner, and they maintain a strict policy of renewing their rental kit every three years.

For those needing a full setup, the centre provides complete kit hire including wetsuits, regulators, BCDs, and computers. The gas station is powered by a Bauer Poséidon insonorised compressor with a capacity of 43m³ per 3 hours. This setup, supported by 12 buffer cylinders and an all-stainless steel filling ramp, ensures high-quality air and the ability to mix all types of Nitrox and Trimix.

The marine life in the Calanques is defined by the spectacular fixed life found on the limestone walls. You will encounter large gorgonians and abundant red coral, particularly when exploring the vaults and overhangs of the underwater cliffs.

In the deeper sections of the walls, such as Cap Morgiou, the ecosystem is rich with various species. You may see the moonfish (Mola mola) and various species of Saint Pierre as you descend the drop-offs.

Macro life is present throughout the rocky habitats and crevices. The complex topography of the tunnels and faults provides plenty of shelter for various crustaceans and smaller organisms inhabiting the Mediterranean seabed.

The centre is primarily active from April to November, with diving available by appointment from December to March. During the peak summer months of July and August, the centre even offers twilight dives in the evenings.

As the centre is located within a National Park, the sites are subject to the natural conditions of the Mediterranean, though the proximity to the port allows for quick access to the various coastal habitats.
