Archipel Plongee

Situated in the picturesque fishing port of La Madrague de Montredon, Archipel Plongée sits at the very entrance of the Parc National des Calanques. This location provides immediate access to one of France's most significant marine protected areas, covering over 43,500 hectares of sea.

The area is defined by its dramatic limestone cliffs and deep blue waters, offering a diverse range of underwater environments. You can expect to find everything from rocky reefs and sandy patches to complex cave systems and historic wrecks.

The centre is affiliated with the FFESSM, following the French national diving federation standards. They provide a structured environment for both recreational divers and those looking to begin their training journey.

Instruction is available for a variety of levels, ranging from initial discovery dives to more formal certification programmes. The team focuses on guiding divers through the natural beauty of the Calanques, ensuring you make the most of the local topography.

For those new to the water, the centre offers introductory dives to give you a first taste of the underwater world. They also run the PADI Seal Team programme for younger divers.

More formal training is available through the Open Water Diver course, providing the foundational skills needed to explore reefs and wrecks safely. The centre is equipped to handle various levels of progression as you build your experience.

The centre maintains a full range of rental equipment for those not travelling with their own kit. This includes masks, snorkels, fins, wetsuits, and various other essentials required for a comfortable dive.

A dedicated shop is available on-site, stocking a selection of diving equipment such as regulators, computers, torches, and gloves. This allows you to browse and select specific items to suit your diving style.

The Mediterranean waters here are home to a diverse array of fish, including common dentex (Dentex dentex), sea bass, and various species of wrasses. You will often see schools of fish, such as sardines (Sardina pilchardus) and silver seabreams, moving through the water column.

The rocky structures and reefs are draped in rich fixed life, including gorgonian sea fans, red coral, and various sponges (Porifera). You can also find yellow solitary coral and purple gorgonians providing colour and texture to the underwater landscape.

For those interested in macro life, the crevices and reef flats host a variety of invertebrates. Look out for octopus (Octopus vulgaris), spiny lobster (Palinuridae), and various nudibranchs hiding amongst the corals and sponges.

Larger predators and interesting residents like the dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) and moray eel (Muraenidae) can be spotted near the rocks. You may also encounter scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae) or different types of sea bream (Sparidae) as you navigate the reefs.

Diving in the Mediterranean is possible year-round, though winter diving requires specific kit such as a semi-dry or drysuit, hood, gloves, and boots. Divers should be prepared to manage their energy levels and move slowly in the cooler months.

The local topography includes various caves and swim-throughs, which can influence local water movement. Always check with your guide regarding the specific conditions for the day's chosen site.
