Flyingfish Spearfishing

Based in Montpellier, Flyingfish has been operating since 2017 as a specialist school dedicated to the disciplines of freediving and spearfishing. Founded by Mat Gonzalez, a DEJEPS instructor and international competitor, the centre focuses on an eco-responsible approach to the marine environment.

You can choose between local excursions around the Mediterranean coastline or join one of the organised multi-day trips. These trips take you to diverse locations including Spain, Saint-Raphaël, the Basque Country, Martinique, and Guadeloupe.

The centre is led by Mat Gonzalez, a highly qualified instructor holding DEJEPS and AIDA certifications. His background as an international competitor brings a high level of technical expertise to the training provided.

Instruction is delivered in French. The school maintains a small group size, with a maximum of 5 divers per guide to ensure close supervision and personalised attention.

The curriculum is centred on freediving and spearfishing, with training available for all skill levels. You can take part in one-day or two-day freediving workshops or intensive spearfishing courses.

As an AIDA affiliated school, Flyingfish provides structured certification pathways for those looking to progress in breath-hold diving.

The Mediterranean habitats around these sites are home to a variety of large species. You can encounter European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), Gilt-head bream (Sparus aurata), and various groupers, including the Dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus) and Mediterranean grouper.

Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae) and Moray eels (Muraenidae) are common residents of the rocky terrain. You may also spot Barracuda (Sphyraena), Blue shark (Prionace glauca), or even a Bottlenose dolphin.

For those interested in macro life, the area hosts a variety of fascinating creatures. Look out for the Octopus (Octopoda), Mediterranean rainbow wrasse (Coris julis), and various Nudibranchs such as Chromodoris willani.

Crustaceans and other small inhabitants are frequent sightings on the seabed. This includes the European spiny lobster (Palinurus elephas), Cuttlefish (Sepiidae), and various hermit crabs and sand gobies.
