Medusas Dive

Located in the heart of Cozumel, Medusas Dive provides access to some of the most celebrated reef systems in the Mexican Caribbean. The centre is positioned to take you from the shallow reef flats to the deeper walls and even into the unique freshwater cenotes found between Tulum and Puerto Morelos.

Whether you are looking to complete your initial certifications or are a seasoned diver seeking wreck or deep diving specialties, the focus here is on precision and environmental stewardship. The centre is built around a commitment to protecting the local marine biodiversity that makes this region so significant.

The centre is led by Eider and Aida, two Spanish instructors who founded the school with a focus on marine protection and inclusive diving. They provide an environment that is LGBT+ friendly and prioritises small groups to ensure that every diver receives individual attention from their guides.

As an SSI-affiliated centre, they welcome divers holding certifications from other agencies such as PADI, SDI, or CMAS. The team is experienced in handling a variety of diver needs, from those taking their first breaths underwater to professional candidates working towards their Divemaster qualification.

Medusas Dive offers a comprehensive curriculum through SSI, covering the entire progression from Open Water Diver to Divemaster. They provide advanced training including AOWD, Deep Diving, and Wreck Diving, as well as specialised skills training like Perfect Buoyancy and Navigation.

For divers looking to refine their technical or professional abilities, the centre offers Stress & Rescue, React Right, and various specialties such as Night Diving, Photography and Video, Search and Recovery, and Current Diving. They also host ecology-focused courses like the Science of Diving.

The centre provides a full range of rental kit for those not travelling with their own equipment. This includes regulators, wetsuits, fins, and masks, as well as torches for night diving excursions.

Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their no-decompression limits. For those venturing into the cenotes or deeper sites, the centre also provides basic insurance for beginners, though they recommend that certified divers carry their own coverage, such as DAN.

The reefs are teeming with life, including various species of turtles, such as the Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), and Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). You will frequently see large schools of fish, including snapper (Lutjanus), jacks (Carangidae), and various species of grouper.

Macro life is abundant for the observant diver. Keep an eye out for the octopus (Octopus vulgaris), various species of moray eel (Muraenidae), and the spiny lobster (Palinuridae). You may also encounter seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), and various species of shrimp (Caridea).

The larger pelagics include reef sharks (Carcharhinus), nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum), and eagle rays (Aetobatus). Between November and February, bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) can be spotted in the area.

The seascape is defined by a rich variety of hard corals, including brain corals, barrel sponges, and sea fans (Gorgoniidae). Deep-water gorgonians and various red and black corals provide the structural complexity that supports the entire ecosystem.

Diving in Cozumel typically involves gentle to moderate currents, though certain sites like Pared de Santa Rosa are known for much faster water movement. This makes the area well-suited for those who enjoy drift diving.

The cenote dives offer a different environment entirely, consisting of natural freshwater sinkholes with various open or closed cave systems, featuring stalactites and stalagmites.
