Located in the hotel zone of San Miguel de Cozumel, Pelagic Ventures Scuba has been a fixture of the local diving community since 1994. This family-owned operation focuses on providing a more intimate alternative to the larger commercial fleets, prioritising small groups and personalised service.

Operating from a convenient location near the main ferry pier, the centre provides easy access to the island's world-renowned reef systems. Whether you are looking to complete your initial certifications or seeking the technical challenge of a deep wall dive, the team focuses on delivering high-quality excursions across the Cozumel marine park.

The team consists of experienced, certified PADI and SSI Divemasters who bring decades of local knowledge to every trip. They are well-versed in the specific nuances of the Yucatán current and the varying conditions of the island's diverse dive sites.

To ensure safety and individual attention, the centre maintains a strict ratio of no more than 8 divers per guide. This small-group approach allows for more precise site selection and better guidance during technical passages or challenging drift dives. All dives are conducted with emergency oxygen available on board.

The centre provides a comprehensive range of training through both PADI and SSI affiliations. Beginners can start their journey with Discover Scuba Diving and progress through to the Open Water Diver certification.

For those looking to advance their skills, the centre offers Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and various specialty courses. Nitrox certification is also available, which is highly recommended for the multi-dive days common in Cozumel.

The centre operates two boats, the Mary Beth, which has a capacity of 8 divers, and the Hatza Ha, which accommodates 6 divers. These vessels are designed for speed and efficiency, ensuring you spend more time in the water and less time in transit.

Both boats are equipped with VHF marine radio for communication and safety. For morning excursions, you will typically complete two dives, while afternoon dives are available on request. Night dives are also offered using single cylinders. On board, the crew provides water and snacks to keep you refreshed between dives.

For divers travelling light, Pelagic Ventures offers full equipment hire, including BCDs, regulators, wetsuits, and masks. The centre takes pride in maintaining its kit to high standards to ensure reliability throughout your stay.

Nitrox is available on-site for divers looking to extend their bottom time. The centre is also fully compliant with all marine park regulations, ensuring that all activities respect the local ecosystem.

The reefs are home to a vast array of marine life, including more than 500 fish species and 100 species of coral. You will regularly see hawksbill turtles, Nassau grouper, and various species of moray eel. Large pelagics such as spotted eagle rays are a highlight, particularly from November to March, while Caribbean reef sharks and nurse sharks are also frequently encountered.

The reef structure itself is built from massive barrel sponges, gorgonians, and brain corals, providing a complex habitat for resident species like blue tangs, parrotfish, and various angelfish. You may also spot large stingrays and various species of snapper and drum moving through the water column.

Macro enthusiasts will find plenty to observe, from colourful nudibranchs and flamingo tongue snails to seahorses and various crustaceans. The local reefs are also known for sightings of the splendid toadfish, an endemic species to Cozumel.

Diving in Cozumel is defined by the Yucatán current, which flows north along the western coast. This creates the classic drift diving experience for which the island is famous, though the strength of the current can vary significantly between sites and seasons.

While many sites offer gentle conditions, others like Punta Sur and the deep sections of Colombia Reef can experience strong and sometimes unpredictable currents. Divers should be prepared for varying levels of surge and flow depending on their chosen itinerary.
