Alor Tanapi Dive Resort

Alor Tanapi Dive Resort is a boutique operation situated on the Sebanjar hillside, overlooking the Pantar Strait and the surrounding islands. Since opening in 2023, it has established itself as a specialised base for divers looking to explore the high biodiversity of the Coral Triangle away from the crowds.

The resort's location on the Bird's Head peninsula provides efficient access to a wide variety of marine environments. Within 20 to 45 minutes by speedboat, you can reach over 40 different dive sites, ranging from steep reef slopes to deep walls and sandy muck sites.

The centre operates with a focus on personalised service, maintaining a ratio of one guide for every four divers. This ensures attentive supervision, whether you are working on a buoyancy course or exploring more challenging drift sites.

The resort is built on a foundation of sustainability and local community support. While the setting is remote, the service is professional, designed for divers who value an intimate, nature-focused experience.

The centre is a PADI affiliated facility offering a full range of training. Beginners can start with the Open Water Diver course, while those looking to progress can enrol in the Advanced Open Water Diver programme.

Specialised training is also available, including the PADI Nitrox course, the Drift Diver course, and the Peak Performance Buoyancy course.

The resort operates two custom-built fiberglass speedboats, each powered by twin 150HP Yamaha 4-stroke engines. These vessels are designed to reach the best sites quickly, ensuring maximum time in the water.

Each boat has a capacity of 8 divers. On board, you will find snacks, coffee, tea, and water to keep you refreshed between dives. The boats are equipped to handle various dive profiles, including night dives.

Full rental kit is available on-site, including BCDs, regulators, wetsuits, masks, fins, snorkels, dive computers, and dive lights. For those who prefer open-heel fins, booties are also provided. To ensure safety during drift or ascent, SMBs and reef hooks are available for use.

Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their bottom time. The resort also provides a dedicated photography room for those looking to document their underwater excursions.

The marine life in the Pantar Strait is defined by incredible diversity. You will encounter large schools of fish including anthias, butterflyfish, and snappers, alongside larger residents like Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), humphead parrotfish (Bolbometopon), and various trevally. The walls and reefs are often patrolled by grey reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), blacktip sharks, and large barracudas.

For those interested in pelagics, the area offers sightings of hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) and eagle rays depending on the season and moon phase. You may also spot tuna (Thunnus), giant trevallies, and various species of turtles in the blue.

The currents in the Pantar Strait are a defining feature of diving in Alor. They can range from gentle drifts to very strong flows, and in some locations, complex 'washing machine' currents can occur where water moves laterally and vertically simultaneously. These conditions are heavily influenced by the tides and moon phases; stronger exchanges occur around the new and full moon.

For a more relaxed drift diving experience, planning your trip during the half-moon phase is recommended, as tidal flows are generally milder. The best time to visit is from March to December, though the dry season from May to October offers the most stable conditions.
