Living On Air

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside Indonesian, so you can sort out the useful things without resorting to underwater sign language. Living On Air is a small resort-style address for couples, families and divers who want the sea close by, a proper place to eat and enough outdoor space to stop moving for a while.

The setting is built around the beach rather than a large list of facilities. You have a garden, terrace, outdoor seating, a lounge and a swimming pool with a view. Free WiFi covers the hotel, and the rooms combine sea views with air conditioning, private bathrooms and balconies. It is the sort of base that lets you return from the water, shower, sit outside and decide whether the next serious task is dinner or a drink.

Living On Air is in Pulau Sarang, Indonesia, on the island of Sumbawa. The resort sits directly by the sea, with access to a white-sand beach, sun loungers and parasols. In other words, the walk from your room to the shoreline is measured in steps, not in optimistic brochure language.

The address is set apart from the main cluster of nearby cafés and restaurants. Toko Populer Taliwang is around 5 miles away by road, while Lesehan Sayang Anak, RM Sasambo and Geprek Padang 86 are each roughly 5 miles away. Several natural parks, including Olat Batubrai and Taman Tiangnam, are also around 5 miles away by road, giving you a few straightforward reasons to hire a car or arrange transport when you want to leave the beach.

Sea views are the common thread here. The accommodation includes rooms and bungalows for two, with balconies, air conditioning and private bathrooms, so you can choose between a room-based stay and the more bungalow-like feel without losing sight of the water. For a couple, the Room with Balcony and Sea View is the obvious choice if outdoor space matters; the sea-view bungalows keep the same practical focus with their own private entrances.

Inside, you have a desk, a seating area, a wardrobe or cupboard, clothes storage and a socket near the bed. The private bathroom includes a shower, towels, a bidet and complimentary toiletries. Air conditioning does the hard work when the day has involved warm water, salt and too much sun, while the balcony gives you somewhere to sit once you are dry and reasonably human again.

Family rooms are available, but the individual accommodation options are designed for a maximum of two guests. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, a small detail worth taking seriously if your knees have logged more dives than your dive computer. Hardwood or parquet floors, non-smoking rooms and garden, courtyard or sea views complete the practical side of the stay.

The Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in the open air, with ocean views and an international menu built around fresh, local ingredients. Breakfast is a buffet, with halal, gluten-free, Asian and American choices, as well as breakfast to go. That gives you more flexibility than a single plate arriving at a fixed moment, particularly on a morning when the sea has its own timetable.

There is one named bar: The Beach Bar. Its speciality is cocktails, best suited to the part of the day when the light drops and nobody wants to discuss buoyancy calculations. The restaurant also serves Indonesian cuisine with halal options, and dining can take place in traditional, modern or romantic surroundings.

A coffee house, shared kitchen, picnic area and outdoor furniture add a few useful alternatives to the main restaurant. Special-diet menus are available on request, and children’s meals are available. Room service is also part of the hotel’s services, useful when a shower and a quiet meal in your room sound more appealing than another social occasion.

The swimming pool has a view, while the direct beach access gives you the simpler option: a lounger, a parasol and no timetable. The garden, terrace and outdoor seating provide more places to sit when you want shade or a change of scenery without committing to an excursion. Sometimes the most ambitious post-dive activity is moving from one chair to another; the layout allows for that perfectly well.

When you do want to go out, the resort offers kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling, boat excursions and island-hopping trips. Bicycle hire, fishing and a cooking class add land-based or slower-paced options, while waterfall visits, hiking, wildlife observation and cultural excursions give you reasons to explore Sumbawa beyond the beach.

For couples travelling together, this mix is useful because it does not require both of you to spend the day doing the same thing. One of you can take the paddleboard, the other can stay under the parasol, and both can reconvene at The Beach Bar without a formal debrief.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 23:00, and check-out from 08:00 to 11:00. An airport shuttle is available on request, and the hotel also offers a shuttle service, car hire and a concierge service. If you are driving, free private parking is available on site without reservation.

Free WiFi is available throughout the hotel. Luggage storage, laundry, a shared lounge with television and room service cover the less glamorous but genuinely useful parts of a travelling diver’s routine. A shared kitchen is available too, while the restaurant and coffee house keep food and drinks close at hand.

Children of any age are welcome, and there is no age requirement for check-in. Extra beds can be requested and depend on the accommodation option and availability; cots are not available. Pets are allowed on request. Parties and events are not permitted, which should make the evening rhythm fairly easy to understand: beach, dinner, cocktail, sleep.
