On a small island off North Sulawesi, Gangga Island Resort & Spa is set up for the kind of holiday where the sea is never far from your plans. You have a white-sand beach, tropical gardens and a jungle-covered hillside around the resort, with cottages arranged along the shore rather than packed into a town street. It is a resort for divers, snorkellers and couples who would rather hear the sea than traffic when the day is done.

The pace is straightforward: breakfast, boat trips or a swim, then a drink at the Coconut Bar while the light changes over the water. The private beach area gives you somewhere to put your feet up, while the lounge, garden and pool offer alternatives when you have had enough salt for one day. A small jewellery, textile and gift shop also saves you from returning home with nothing but a damp logbook and a collection of underwater photographs.

The resort is in Serai, Indonesia, on Pulau Gangga, a small island off Manado in North Sulawesi. It sits directly on the sea, with the beach at the edge of the property and the jungle-covered hill rising behind it. This is an island location in the practical sense: reaching the resort involves a road journey to Serei harbour followed by a boat crossing.

Manado is around 24 miles away in the wider location description, but this is not a hotel for wandering into town for dinner. Nearby mainland places include Lihunu on Bangka Island, around 6 miles away as the crow flies, while the resort’s own restaurant does the useful work of keeping meals close at hand. You choose Gangga for the island setting, not for a row of cafés outside the gate.

The accommodation is in cottages with sea views and a terrace, giving you somewhere to sit with a coffee before the first boat or to let the day settle afterwards. The Superior and Deluxe cottages are both aimed at couples, with a king-size bed, a separate seating area and a private entrance. The Deluxe version adds a terrace to the sea-view arrangement, which is the sensible choice if outdoor space matters to you as much as the view itself.

Inside, air conditioning deals with the tropical heat, while a ceiling fan gives you another way to keep the air moving. A mosquito net is part of the room setup, and the private bathroom comes with a shower or bath, bathrobes and a hairdryer. There is also a television, desk, wardrobe, alarm clock, electric kettle, tea and coffee maker, and minibar. In other words, you can cool down, shower, hang up the day’s clothes and sit down without having to negotiate the room like a luggage puzzle.

The cottages are on the ground floor, and daily housekeeping keeps the practical side of the stay in order. Free Wi-Fi is available across the resort, although the island setting and the underwater timetable may encourage you to leave the desk alone. That is probably no great loss.

Tuturuga Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in an open-air setting beneath coconut palms. The cooking covers Mediterranean, Indonesian and local dishes, with seafood included in the mix. Breakfast is a buffet of tropical fruit, juices, cereals, yoghurt, fresh pastries, homemade bread and Western or Indonesian dishes prepared to order. It is the sort of spread that can deal with both an early start and a diver who has rediscovered hunger.

Lunch is à la carte or buffet-style depending on occupancy, while dinner brings a broad selection of international and Indonesian dishes from the menu. The chefs adapt to special dietary requirements, and the water served in the restaurant, along with the ice, is potable. That removes two small but useful questions from the evening.

There is one bar, the Coconut Bar, open throughout the day for cocktails, tea and coffee. Morning and afternoon snacks are served at the pool bar, and weekly fish barbecues come with local musicians playing Polynesian-style music. The dress code is casual, which is fortunate: formal shoes and post-dive feet have never been natural allies. Daily room service is also available.

The large saltwater infinity pool faces the ocean and comes with sun loungers, beach towels, drinking water and afternoon tea with local specialities. It gives you a useful choice on a non-diving day: swim, stretch out beside the pool or walk down to the private white-sand beach instead. The beach itself has loungers and towels, with tropical trees and plants providing the backdrop rather than a line of buildings.

Pasung Spa handles the slower business. Its menu includes massages, facials, reflexology, body scrubs, body masks, aromatherapy and foot baths, with treatments drawing on Minahasan traditions, Balinese massage and tropical plant extracts. Couples can book a couples massage, while the spa also offers foot, back, neck, head and full-body treatments. A morning yoga session by the sea is another way to loosen up before the day gets properly warm.

For something more active, you have table tennis, billiards, a games room and board games. The tour desk can arrange a guided Gangga Island visit, trips to the Minahasa highlands, Tangkoko National Park, nearby islands, traditional markets and local cultural sites. Sunset boat trips with snacks and drinks, fishing, snorkelling and other boat excursions extend the options beyond the beach. Babysitting and baby cots are available for families travelling with young children.

The standard transfer is a vehicle journey from Sam Ratulangi Airport in Manado to Serei harbour, followed by a 20-minute boat ride to Gangga Island. The airport is around 28 miles away by road, with the road leg taking about 70 minutes in the stated journey details. An airport shuttle is available through the resort, in a private or shared form depending on the arrangement, and you should book it with the property. The route is part of the stay here, not a quick taxi ride from the terminal.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 18:00, and check-out from 07:00 to 12:00. You need to give the resort your expected arrival time in advance and show photo identification and a credit card at check-in. Payment before arrival by bank transfer may be required, with the resort sending the instructions after booking. Private check-in and check-out, luggage storage, concierge assistance and a tour desk are available.

Laundry, ironing and car hire services are available, and airport transfers can be arranged. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort. Smoking is allowed in designated areas, pets are not allowed, and children over one year are welcome. If you are bringing cash for extras, use clean, new and undamaged foreign notes; Indonesian banks and exchange bureaux may reject old or marked ones. Visa and Mastercard are accepted, with card transactions converted into Indonesian rupiah.

The resort’s conservation work is tied to the marine environment around the island. It works with the North Sulawesi Watersports Association and NTTI, and uses Biorock and Hexareef technology for coral-reef restoration. The operation also follows strict ecological guidelines and a near-zero-waste policy, with environmentally friendly cleaning products used across the property.
