Critter Circus II, Sulawesi: Hard Coral Reef Exploration

Critter Circus II presents a clear contrast to its namesake, focusing on a healthy hard coral reef system rather than muck. You descend onto a vibrant slope, where the reef structure begins at a maximum depth of 18 metres and gradually ascends, forming a continuous living wall that almost breaches the surface at 3 metres. This gradual incline, covered densely in hard corals, creates an expansive habitat for a variety of reef life.

The most prominent feature of this reef is the hard coral, particularly the extensive growth of staghorn corals (Acropora). These formations are present throughout the dive, starting from the deeper sections and continuing all the way to the shallowest part of the site. They define the topography and provide the primary structure for the ecosystem you will encounter as you move along the reef.

As you navigate the coral gardens, you'll encounter large, active schools of fusiliers, damselfish, snappers, and groupers moving through the water column and above the branching corals. They shelter within the intricate structure of the Acropora, creating a dynamic visual against the reef. This constant activity around the corals is what gives the site its reputation as a circus of marine life.

Pay close attention to the sponges scattered across the reef structure, as they serve as excellent camouflage for giant frogfish. These ambush predators blend seamlessly with their surroundings, requiring a patient eye to spot them. Their presence highlights the site’s macro potential amidst the larger reef inhabitants.
