Coral Cove, Puerto Galera: Reef Diving for Macro and Critters

Coral Cove presents a distinct dive profile starting in shallow coral gardens before gradually sloping downwards. As you descend, the reef transitions into a more pronounced incline, eventually meeting a small wall section at approximately 20 metres. This geological shift creates varying light conditions and provides different habitats for marine life, making for a varied dive experience as you navigate along its contours.

The topography of Coral Cove includes several small overhangs along its depths. These natural formations serve as discreet hiding spots for numerous resident species. Investigating these sheltered areas often reveals species that prefer to stay out of the open current or direct light, rewarding careful observation, especially with a good dive torch. Pay attention to crevices and ledges within these overhangs, as they often host a concentrated density of smaller organisms.

Frogfish (Antennariidae) are also a regular sight, often camouflaged among sponges or coral branches, requiring a keen eye to spot.

Beyond the smaller inhabitants, emperor fish (Lethrinidae) move through the reef, alongside schools of fusiliers (Caesionidae). Morays (Muraenidae) are often seen protruding from their hideaways, while cuttlefish (Sepiida) demonstrate their colour-changing abilities. Pygmy seahorses (Hippocampus bargibanti) blend seamlessly into gorgonian corals, demanding patient searching to locate, offering a challenge for even experienced macro enthusiasts.

The dive site also features a wooden wreck positioned at the edge of the deeper section, functioning as an artificial reef. This structure provides additional surfaces for coral growth and shelters a different array of marine life. This small wreck integrates into the natural environment, offering an alternative habitat for species that might not otherwise be found directly on the sloping reef. Lionfish (Pterois volitans) are frequently seen patrolling the reef, while pipefishes (Syngnathinae) are often found among the coral polyps.
