Dive Palancar

Operating on the southern end of Cozumel since 1992, Dive Palancar has become a fixture of the local diving community. The centre is strategically positioned at the Sunscape Sabor & Secrets Aura hotels, making it a convenient base for divers staying in the southern part of the island.

Beyond standard reef diving, the centre offers a versatile programme that includes drift diving, wreck exploration, and night dives. Their operations are designed to accommodate both the recreational snorkeller and the more experienced diver looking to expand their certification through specialised PADI courses.

As a PADI affiliated centre, Dive Palancar maintains a professional team of certified instructors to oversee all diving and water sports activities. The team manages everything from introductory Discover Scuba Diving sessions to professional-level Divemaster training.

Safety and structured learning are central to their approach, with instructors supervising all excursions, including snorkeling and offshore fishing. The centre has held a certificate of excellence since 2016, reflecting their long-term presence in the Cozumel diving industry.

The training programme is extensive, covering the full spectrum of PADI certifications. New divers can begin with Discover Scuba Diving or the Scuba Diver course, progressing through Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver.

For those looking to refine their skills, the centre offers several specialty courses including Nitrox, Deep Diver, Drift Diver, Night Diver, and Peak Performance Buoyancy Control. More advanced students can pursue Rescue Diver, Divemaster, or specialised training in Underwater Navigation, Underwater Photography, and Search and Recovery.

The centre provides full equipment hire for divers, covering all the essentials needed for reef and drift diving. If you prefer to travel light, you can request a full kit rental in advance of your trip.

Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their bottom time, and the centre is equipped to handle the requirements of various diving specialties. For those interested in offshore activities, they also operate a 30-foot Blackfin sportfisherman equipped with Penn International rods and reels for fishing excursions.

The reefs around Cozumel are home to a vast array of marine life, from large pelagics to intricate reef inhabitants. You will frequently encounter schools of fish including snappers, jacks (Carangidae), and various species of grouper (Epinephelus). Larger animals such as eagle rays (Aetobatus), spotted eagle rays, and various sharks, including Caribbean reef sharks and Blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus), are part of the local ecosystem.

Turtle watching is a common highlight, with Green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), Hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), and Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) often sighted in the area. You may also see Southern stingrays (Hypanus americanus) and various species of rays patrolling the sandy patches.

For those interested in macro life, the crevices and corals host a wealth of smaller creatures. Look for seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), and various crustaceans including Spiny lobster (Palinuridae), lobster (Homaridae), and shrimp. Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), octopuses (Octopus vulgaris), and various species of moray eels (Muraenidae) provide excellent subjects for underwater photographers.

The structural beauty of the reefs is provided by extensive hard corals, including brain corals, elkhorn coral, and various sea fans (Gorgoniidae). Deep-water gorgonians, sea rods, and large sponges create a complex habitat for the countless tropical fish, such as angelfish (Pomacanthidae), parrotfish (Calotomus), and butterflyfish (Chaetodon), that call these reefs home.

Diving in Cozumel is heavily influenced by the local currents, which often necessitate the use of drift diving techniques. The centre's schedule accounts for these conditions, offering specific deep and shallow dive slots to suit different profiles.
