Aqua Dive Resort Amed is a resort for divers who want the practical bits of a Bali stay in one place, without turning every evening into a logistical exercise. You have gardens, two shared pools, a spa, an open-air restaurant and a rooftop bar, while the coast is only a short walk away. It is the sort of arrangement that lets you come back from the water, shower, eat and then decide whether the evening needs anything more ambitious. It probably does not.

That matters when you are discussing an early departure, a meal that needs adjusting or the small but important question of where your belongings have been left. The resort sits in Amed, on Bali's north-eastern coast, in the Purwakerthi area of Abang. Amed Beach is about 100 metres away, while Jemeluk Beach is roughly 400 metres away. The Double Room with Terrace suits a couple who want a king-size bed and somewhere outside to sit, while the Twin Room gives two separate beds for friends travelling together. For a family or small group, the Family Room with Garden View has a more workable sleeping arrangement, and interconnected rooms are available. The Villa with Garden View is the one to consider when two bathrooms and generous shared space will make the difference between a holiday and a careful exercise in not stepping on one another's fins.

Air conditioning and a fan are available, which gives you two ways to deal with Bali's warm, damp evenings. A minibar, tea and coffee-making facilities and an electric kettle cover the immediate return-to-room routine, while a wardrobe and clothes-drying rack help keep the travelling kit under control. Views vary by accommodation, with garden, pool and mountain outlooks available; some accommodation also has a terrace or private outdoor space.

The larger options make sense when you want room to sit, not simply room to sleep. A suite or villa gives you more opportunity to spread out after diving, while a terrace room is the straightforward couple's choice. Daily housekeeping, towels, a private bathroom and a flat-screen television round out the less glamorous but useful parts of the night. In other words: somewhere to cool down, put your feet up and stop discussing whose turn it is to find dinner.

The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in an open-air setting among the tropical gardens. The kitchen moves between Balinese recipes and international comfort food, with local and international dishes freshly prepared. That gives you a little more range than the usual post-dive choice between something fried and something described as 'light'.

Breakfast is included and starts at 7.30am, continuing until 11am. Continental, full English or Irish, American, Asian, vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free and kosher options are available, with breakfast to go also listed. Unlimited barista-quality coffee is part of the resort's dining offer, which is useful information for anyone whose first dive begins before the rest of the village has properly opened its eyes.

There is one bar: the rooftop bar and terrace. It serves signature cocktails and cold beer, with Mount Agung and the Bali Sea providing the view rather than a television doing the hard work. Curated music, ambient lighting, live performances and happy-hour specials give the evening some life, while outdoor seating keeps the setting informal. The restaurant also has outdoor seating and candlelit dinners, so you can stay on site without being confined to the same mood every night.

Two shared outdoor pools give you a choice of a proper swim or the much more common diver's version: getting in, cooling down and staying there. Sun loungers, beach towels, umbrellas and garden seating make the space useful between outings, while the outdoor furniture, picnic area and fireplace give you somewhere to sit when you have had enough water for one day.

Private parking is available nearby and requires reservation, which is worth arranging before arrival if you are driving. The front desk operates around the clock, with private check-in and check-out available, so arrivals do not have to fit neatly into the middle of the day.

Check-in runs from 2pm until midnight, and check-out from 11am until noon. Early check-in and late check-out can be requested.
