Kura Kura Divers Lodge

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside French, Dutch, Chinese, Indonesian and German. That is useful before the first coffee, and even more so when you are trying to explain a late arrival, a dietary request or the difference between a twin room and a double without resorting to underwater hand signals.

Kura Kura Divers Lodge is a 16-room lodge in Amed, opened in 2020, with a garden, an outdoor pool and the Kura Bar at its centre. The mood is sociable rather than ceremonious: music, billiards, board games, sports broadcasts and film nights give you somewhere to land when the day has involved rather more salt water than conversation.

For a couple, the pool-view double room keeps things simple, with a large bed and a private balcony. Travelling with a friend? The twin room gives each of you a proper single bed, which is a small but important victory after several early starts.

You are in Amed, on the east coast of Bali, at Jalan I Ketut Natih. The ocean is about 0.05 miles away, and Amed Beach is reached on foot in a few minutes. Jemeluk Beach is about 0.7 miles away, while Lipah Beach lies roughly 3 miles along the coast.

The lodge is about a five-minute walk from what has become Amed's centre. That puts several places to eat close enough for a change of scenery without turning dinner into an expedition: Warung Happy is about 50 metres away, Warung Nikmat about 100 metres away and Warung Santa Fe Amed about 100 metres away.

For a wider outing, Tulamben is about 20 minutes away. Ngurah Rai International Airport is roughly 56 miles by road, with a drive of about one hour and 25 minutes. Tirta Gangga Water Palace is around 9 miles away by road, giving you a straightforward land-based diversion when your surface interval needs to last longer than usual.

The rooms are designed for practical recovery rather than decorative ceremony. Air conditioning helps with the combination of tropical heat and a full day outside, while hot water takes care of the less glamorous part of returning from the coast. Each room has a private balcony or terrace with a day bed, plus a view towards the garden or pool.

The Double Room with Pool View is the natural choice when you want the pool in sight and a large bed at the end of the day. The Twin Room suits two divers travelling together, with separate beds and the same 30-square-metre footprint shown on the room card below. Interconnecting rooms are available, which gives families a little more flexibility; children of any age are welcome, and a cot can be requested for children aged two or under.

Inside, you get a minibar, a desk, free WiFi, a wardrobe and a kettle. The mattresses are made to measure and the bedding is described as high quality. There is also a clothes rack and a drying rack for clothing, useful for ordinary holiday laundry and damp beachwear. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, so keep that in mind if knees and luggage have been negotiating a difficult relationship lately.

The Kura Bar is both the restaurant and the bar, so you do not have to move far when hunger arrives ahead of schedule. Its menu covers Asian, Indonesian and European food, with comfort food and pizzas alongside the more local flavours. Special-diet menus are available on request.

This is the sort of place where a beer can turn into a meal without anyone making a fuss about the order of events. The bar serves a selection of beers, including craft beers, and the evening comes with changing music playlists covering different styles, continents and eras.

There is one bar, Kura Bar, and it doubles as the social room: board games, billiards, sports broadcasts and film nights are all part of the set-up. Breakfast arrangements are not specified, so check the meal plan attached to your chosen booking rather than assuming that the first dive-day coffee will organise itself.

The outdoor pool is 2.6 metres deep, with plenty of space around it for a drink, a sun lounger or the increasingly respectable art of doing absolutely nothing. Pool and beach towels are available, as are sun loungers or beach chairs. The garden, sun terrace, patio and outdoor furniture give you several places to sit without having to claim the same chair all week.

When sitting still has run its course, billiards provides a low-impact contest with clear rules and no need to remember where you put your fins. Board games and film nights offer quieter alternatives, while live sports broadcasts provide the familiar test of whether a holiday can be peaceful when someone is shouting at a screen.

The beach is close enough for a wander, and the tour desk can help shape time on land. Amed also gives you access to places such as Fishing Bali, about 50 metres away, and Obyek Wisata Tirta Jemeluk, roughly 350 metres away. The result is a lodge where your non-diving day can remain close to the property, or expand a little when the legs are willing.

Check-in runs from 13:00 to 22:00, and check-out from 07:00 to 12:00. Private and express check-in and check-out are available, with luggage storage for the awkward gap between leaving the room and leaving Amed. The tour desk is on hand for arranging outings, while free WiFi covers the property.

An airport shuttle is available to arrange with the lodge. Free public parking is available on site without a reservation, and the rooms use universal sockets. There is no age requirement for check-in, and pets are welcome on request without an additional charge.

Children of any age can stay. Children aged nine and over are charged as adults under the property's policy, while cots for younger children depend on the room option and availability; extra beds are not available. Cancellation and prepayment conditions vary with the accommodation selected, so read the terms attached to that room before confirming.

Solar hot water is part of the lodge's set-up, a practical choice in a place where sunshine is not exactly in short supply. It keeps one everyday service tied to the conditions around you rather than treating energy as an invisible tap.

The operation also follows stated employment principles that include legal work permits for expatriate staff and fair, decent wages. There is no certification to add to the description, but these concrete measures give you something more useful than a green leaf on a brochure.
