China Shop is positioned on the eastern flank of Gili Lawa Darat, specifically within a well-protected bay. This sheltered location minimises direct exposure to strong oceanic currents, making for generally calm conditions in the main diving area. The topography here is gentle, featuring numerous coral bommies and plateaus that rise from a sandy bottom, providing diverse habitats for smaller marine species.

Upon descent, you'll find yourself amidst an expansive hard coral garden. Unlike many sites dominated by soft coral, China Shop is characterised by its delicate, intricate structures formed by various species of hard coral. These formations create a maze of hiding spots and feeding grounds, supporting a large resident population of reef fish and invertebrates.

As you navigate through these coral formations, keep an eye out for the smaller inhabitants. Schools of glassfish (Ambassidae) are a consistent presence, often shimmering around the coral heads. Look closer, and you might spot leaf scorpionfish (Taenianotus triacanthus) camouflaged against the corals, or octopuses (Octopus vulgaris) moving subtly across the reef. Mandarinfish (Synchiropus splendidus) are also known to inhabit the more sheltered crevices.

While the main focus is on the macro and reef life, the site's proximity to deeper waters means occasional encounters with larger pelagics. Manta rays (Manta birostris) and spotted eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) have been observed cruising past in the distance, particularly towards the mouth of the bay. These sightings tend to be fleeting, as the main reef structure keeps divers engaged with its intricate ecosystem.

Most of the intricate life is found in the upper 10-15 metres, where light penetration is optimal for coral growth and nutrient exchange.
