Banyuwangi Diving School

Banyuwangi Diving School is situated in Bangsring, at the eastern edge of the Banyuwangi region in East Java. This area has undergone a significant social and environmental shift, moving from a traditional fishing community to a dedicated 'kampung selam' or diving village. Facilities at the centre are comprehensive, including a classroom for theoretical training, a swimming pool, and a confined water area for skill practice. The site also features a parking area, toilets, and dedicated spaces for rinsing and storing equipment after a dive.

The reefs are home to a wide variety of larger marine life, including reef sharks (Carcharhinus), eagle rays (Aetobatus), and turtles. You can often encounter schools of fish, including barracuda, alongside stingrays and various reef fish species.

The hard and soft coral structures provide a complex habitat for a multitude of smaller creatures. You will see a diverse array of reef fish, such as triggerfish, surgeonfish (Acanthuridae), and various species of angelfish (Pomacanthidae) and butterflyfish (Chaetodon) navigating the reef top.

For those interested in macro life, the area offers plenty of interest with sightings of octopus (Octopus vulgaris), crabs (Brachyura), and various crustaceans. Keep an eye out for smaller inhabitants like shrimp (Caridea), anemone shrimp, and various species of gobies (Gobiidae) amongst the corals.

Diving conditions vary depending on the chosen site. The Bangsring house reef and the area around the Gandrung Statue are known for having calm and gentle currents, making them suitable for beginners. In contrast, sites like Watudodol and the West Bali coast are known for more exhilarating drift dives where currents play a significant role in the experience.
