Max. depth · 25 mDescend along a vibrant 40-metre wall on Bunaken's east side, where pristine shallow reefs meet a diverse macro scene.
Bunaken Timur unfolds on the eastern side of Bunaken Island, presenting a dynamic dive along a dramatic 40-metre wall. Our descent often begins over its shallow reef top, a realm particularly pristine and teeming with life, making it equally inviting for snorkelers. As we push past the shallows, the wall itself reveals an intricate tapestry of hard and soft corals, providing shelter and sustenance for a myriad of resident creatures.
Unlike many other walls in the Bunaken National Park, Bunaken Timur distinguishes itself with a notable abundance of nudibranchs, adding a unique macro dimension to the dive. Keep a keen eye out for various species here, including vibrant Chromodoris, the intricate Coryphillina exoptata, and the distinctive Nembrothas. This rich diversity of sea slugs offers detailed exploration for those who appreciate the smaller, often overlooked inhabitants of the reef.
The shallow reef top, serving as a vital nursery for juvenile reef fish, constantly pulsates with new life. Here, you'll encounter a vibrant community of young fish, darting between healthy soft corals, showcasing the regenerative power of this marine ecosystem. This zone provides a stark contrast to the deeper wall, allowing for a multi-layered dive experience within the same site, catering to different interests and depths.
While exploring the wall, you'll often encounter substantial marine life such as green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), gracefully navigating the reef structure. Eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) are also known to glide silently through the blue, offering a moment of awe against the backdrop of the coral-laden wall. The moderate current here typically provides a gentle drift, facilitating a relaxed yet engaging dive experience over considerable distances.
This site is accessible to divers of all levels, with a maximum depth extending to 25 metres. Expect moderate currents, which often provide an enjoyable drift along the wall. Visibility typically ranges between 15 and 25 metres, offering clear views of the extensive coral formations and marine life.
