Koh Larn, Pattaya: Reefs, Wrecks, and Resident Turtles

Koh Larn, situated just over 12 km west of Pattaya Beach, stands as the largest of the near islands and a primary dive destination from the mainland. Its diverse underwater topography includes extensive coral reefs and a notable shallow wreck, providing varied environments for exploration. The island's numerous dive sites cater to a range of experience levels, making it a valuable location for both skill development and detailed underwater observation.

Approaching the southern end of Koh Larn, you'll find a bay protected by a small concrete platform and a breakwater. About 50 meters from this platform, large concrete rings are submerged, serving as artificial reefs. These structures are heavily encrusted with soft corals and gorgonian fans, creating intricate habitats for a variety of reef fish. This area offers a sheltered environment, ideal for acclimatization dives or extended bottom time for macro photography.

The most recognized coral reef area is Had Nuan, frequently utilized for training dives due to its accessible depths and relatively calm conditions. As you navigate around this cap, the reef gradually deepens, revealing substantial coral bommies that rise from the seabed. These formations act as focal points for marine life, providing shelter and feeding grounds for a concentrated population of reef residents.

Across Koh Larn's dive sites, the macro fauna is noteworthy. Keep an eye out for pipefish (Syngnathus), small gobies, and various shrimp species, often found camouflaged among the corals or sandy patches. These smaller creatures require a keen eye and a patient approach, rewarding observers with intricate behaviors and vibrant patterns, making the site suitable for those focusing on micro-environments.

Sea turtles are a consistent highlight around Koh Larn; you'll often encounter them grazing on the seagrass beds or resting within the coral reef structures. Both green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) are regularly seen, moving unhurriedly through the habitat. Their presence adds a significant encounter to the dive, allowing for observations of their natural foraging and resting behaviors.

Beyond the macro inhabitants, a broader spectrum of reef fish populates the waters of Koh Larn. Angelfish (Pomacanthidae), pufferfish (Tetraodontidae), and parrotfish (Scaridae) are common sights, alongside reef crabs and other crustaceans. Hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) are present, as are blue spot stingrays (Neotrygon kuhlii), nudibranchs, and octopuses (Octopoda). The variety of reef fish is particularly evident in the shallower sections of the sites, where light penetration fuels a thriving ecosystem.
