Koh Sak, Pattaya: Shallow Reefs and Macro Life

Koh Sak, one of the 'Near Islands' just 10 kilometers west of Pattaya Beach, presents a dive profile well-suited for a variety of experiences. This horseshoe-shaped island features several distinct dive zones, including vibrant coral reefs, sandy slopes, and artificial reef projects. The shallow nature of these sites allows for extended bottom times, providing ample opportunity to thoroughly explore the intricate ecosystems present.

Below the surface, the eastern and western caps of Koh Sak feature shallow reefs that transition into sandy seabeds. These reefs are home to a rich abundance of smaller marine life. You'll find diverse crustacean populations, numerous nudibranch species, and decorator crabs (Camposcia retusa) camouflaged among the corals. Keep your eyes open for octopuses (Octopus vulgaris) navigating the reef crevices and various species of butterflyfish (Chaetodon spp.) flitting between the coral formations.

Beyond the natural formations, Koh Sak incorporates artificial reef structures such as cubes and tire reefs, which have been deployed to enhance marine habitat. These man-made additions attract schooling fish (Pisces) and provide shelter for juvenile marine life, offering a different topography to explore. Such areas often become focal points for photographers, given the density of life they support and the unique visual appeal of the structures themselves.

Koh Sak is known for specific animal encounters. Bamboo sharks (Chiloscyllium griseum) are frequently observed, typically found resting under coral overhangs or nestled between rocks. Sea turtles, particularly hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), are a common sight, either grazing on the seagrass beds that flank the reefs or taking a break on the coral formations. Stingrays (Dasyatis pastinaca) can be seen gliding across the sandy patches, often partially buried.

The diverse marine population extends to smaller, more cryptic species. Look for seahorses (Hippocampus spp.) clinging to soft corals or seagrass. Clownfish (Amphiprioninae) are abundant, tending their anemone homes, and you can also spot various damselfish (Pomacentridae) schools around the reef. The macro life further includes a range of shrimp, blennies (Blenniidae), and gobies (Gobiidae), rewarding slow, attentive diving.

Visibility at Koh Sak can fluctuate, but it often provides clear conditions, particularly during fair weather. While specific figures can range from 5 to 15 metres, the protection offered by the island against predominant weather patterns means it frequently offers some of the best visibility in the immediate Pattaya area. This clearer water, combined with the presence of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) occasionally sighted in the wider region, contributes to the overall appeal of the site.
