Koh Rin, Pattaya: Reefs, Walls, and Pelagic Encounters

Koh Rin sits as a prominent feature among Pattaya's outer islands, a remote destination that rewards the dive trip from Bali Hai Pier. The island hosts several distinct dive zones, each offering a different underwater topography and experience. While broad descriptions might group it as a reef or island, its true character emerges across specific sites like North Rock, South Rock, and the main Koh Rin Bay, providing varied profiles for any dive plan.

Approaching Koh Rin, you'll find the main island bay offers a sheltered entry, with a gently sloping reef leading down to a maximum depth of 18 meters. This area is typically calm, making it a good starting point to acclimatize and observe the abundant reef life without significant current. The gradual slope is home to fallen rocks, draped in sponge corals, gorgonians, and black coral bushes, creating a rich habitat for smaller, resident species.

Further out, the character of Koh Rin shifts dramatically. South Rock, or Hin Ton Mai, presents a more dynamic experience with large fish stocks and varied marine biodiversity. This site is known for its hard and soft corals, gorgonians, and a healthy population of invertebrates. Keep an eye out for larger individuals like moray eels hidden within the crevices and the regular sightings of barracudas cruising the reef edges.

North Rock, or Hin Khao, while having fewer sprawling coral reefs, features extensive rocky outcrops heavily encrusted with hard corals. This area is a prime location for macro enthusiasts, as it offers a chance to spot unusual nudibranchs, pipefish, and razorfish tucked into the smaller ledges. Younger sharks also frequent the area, often found resting amongst the rocky formations and deeper overhangs.

The resident marine life across Koh Rin presents a consistent draw. You'll encounter harlequin sweetlips and red snappers moving in schools, while squirrelfish and lionfish often shelter closer to the reef. The impressive communities of anemones and Neptune's barrel sponges lining the cracks and ledges are actively inhabited by various moray eels and a wide array of invertebrates, adding to the detailed exploration of the reef structure.

Pelagic encounters are a genuine possibility here, particularly around the more exposed sections of the island. Sharks and barracudas are regular visitors, adding a different dimension to the dive. While not a guaranteed sighting, the presence of these larger species, along with turtles, indicates a healthy overall ecosystem and the more oceanic influences on this outer island site.
