Gordon Reef stands as the most southerly of the Tiran reefs, immediately identifiable by the distinct silhouette of the 'Loullia' wreck at its northern edge. This Panamanian cargo ship, which ran aground in 1981, has become an integral part of the reef's topography, creating a unique blend of natural and artificial structure. Approaching the site, the wreck provides a clear landmark, hinting at the varied underwater landscape that awaits below the surface.
The dive typically begins over the shallow southern plateau, an area that often provides shelter from the prevailing wave action, making it a suitable entry point for drift dives. This gentle flow allows you to glide effortlessly, observing the intricate details of the reef system as it unfolds. The plateau gradually gives way to deeper sections, including a sandy depression known as the Amphitheatre or Shark Pool, and a wall that drops off into deeper water, offering a diverse profile for exploration.
The reef system itself teems with a vibrant array of marine inhabitants. You will encounter an abundance of smaller reef fish alongside larger species. Keep an eye out for turtles (Chelonia mydas, Eretmochelys imbricata) navigating the coral gardens, and the imposing presence of giant moray eels (Gymnothorax javanicus) peering from their rocky crevices, adding a sense of wildness to the dive experience.
Beyond the resident reef dwellers, Gordon Reef is also known for its pelagic visitors, particularly during specific seasons. The spring months offer an increased chance to witness eagle rays (Aetobatus narinari) gliding gracefully through the blue. This period also presents opportunities for encounters with majestic mantas (Manta birostris), sweeping past in their characteristic, awe-inspiring manner, making spring a particularly rewarding time to explore these waters.
The site's topography includes not only the natural reef and the Loullia wreck but also scattered metal drums and cables. These artificial structures have become integrated into the ecosystem, providing additional habitats and shelter for a variety of marine life. This blend of natural and man-made elements creates a complex environment that supports a wide range of species, from small invertebrates to larger predators.
Currents at Gordon Reef are a defining feature and can be variable, ranging from light to strong, especially at the northern and southern ends and around the reef’s corners. These currents contribute to the health of the reef, bringing nutrients that support the abundant marine life. Understanding the current patterns is key to planning your dive, as they can dictate the direction and pace of your drift, offering a dynamic and engaging experience.
Depths at Gordon Reef range from a minimum of 10 metres on the shallow plateau to a maximum of 30 metres along the deeper reef sections. Visibility typically ranges between 20 and 30 metres, offering clear views of the reef structure and its inhabitants. The combination of depth, current, and diverse topography ensures that each dive at Gordon Reef presents a unique set of conditions and encounters.
Gordon Reef is accessible for divers holding an intermediate to advanced certification, with a minimum of 50 logged dives recommended due to potentially strong and variable currents. Depths range from 10 metres to a maximum of 30 metres. Visibility typically holds between 20 and 30 metres. While accessible year-round, the spring months offer the best chance for encounters with mantas and eagle rays.
