Deep Blue

Deep Blue has been a fixture of the Cozumel diving scene since 1995. Located just five minutes from the Ferry Pier, the centre provides a reliable base for exploring the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.

Operating as an official PADI and SSI centre, they have built a reputation for professional, small-group excursions. Whether you are looking for a morning drift dive or a twilight excursion, the centre organises trips that cater to various experience levels and interests.

The team at Deep Blue is composed of experienced, multilingual instructors capable of guiding divers in English, Spanish, French, and German. This ensures clear communication during briefings and underwater, which is vital for safety and enjoyment.

They maintain a strict diver-to-guide ratio, with a maximum of seven divers per guide. This approach allows for more personalised attention and better navigation, particularly when tackling the stronger currents found at more advanced sites.

Beyond standard excursions, the centre is committed to marine protection, encouraging the use of reef-safe sunscreen and reusable water bottles to help preserve the local ecosystem.

Deep Blue offers a comprehensive curriculum for all stages of a diver's development. Beginners can start with the Discover Scuba programme, while those looking to qualify can work through the Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water courses.

For more experienced divers, the centre provides a range of PADI and SSI Diving Specialties, as well as Rescue Diver and Emergency First Responder training. They also offer Refresher Courses for those returning to the water after a break.

The centre operates three boats, each configured to accommodate different group sizes, with capacities ranging from 6 to 10 passengers. These vessels are powered by reliable Yamaha 4-stroke engines, including 60hp and 115hp models, ensuring efficient transit to the dive sites.

On board, you will find freshwater, fruit, and snacks to keep you refreshed between dives. The boats are equipped with essential safety gear, including oxygen, first aid kits, and VHF radios.

For those not travelling with their own kit, a full range of equipment is available for hire. This includes BCDs, regulators, and dive computers, as well as masks, fins, and wetsuits.

Nitrox is available for use, with 32% and 36% blends provided in 100 cubic ft. cylinders. The centre also offers underwater lights for night dives and specialised kit for those needing specific items like snorkels or masks.

The reefs are home to a vast array of marine life, including large pelagics such as Eagle ray (Aetobatus), sharks, and hammerhead sharks. You will frequently encounter schools of fish, including snapper, jacks (Carangidae), and barracuda schools.

Macro life enthusiasts can look for octopus (Octopus vulgaris), squid (Sepioteuthis sepioidea), and various species of moray eel (Muraenidae). Keep an eye out for the splendid toadfish, which is often seen during night dives, as well as seahorses (Hippocampus kuda) and nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani).

The hard structures of the reef are built from brain corals, elkhorn coral, and various sponges, including giant sponges and red coral sponges. You will also find sea fans (Gorgoniidae) and deep-water gorgonians providing texture to the seascape.

Between June and September, there is the opportunity to see whale sharks during seasonal excursions.

Cozumel is famous for its drift diving, where gentle currents are typical within the Marine Park. However, more advanced sites can experience stronger currents that require confident buoyancy and finning skills.

Visibility is generally excellent, with the centre noting a minimum of 36 metres.
