Seahorse Bay, Gili Islands: Critter Diving on Lombok's West Coast

Diving Seahorse Bay takes you to Lombok’s west coast, just south-east of Gili Trawangan. The site presents a shallow, sandy slope dropping gently from around 5 metres. Rather than large coral structures, you'll find extensive seagrass beds interspersed with coral rubble, forming a textured substrate. This environment holds a unique draw for divers focused on macro life, offering a different profile from the typical reef dives often found around the Gilis.

The focus at Seahorse Bay is on the small inhabitants of this sandy environment. As you explore the bottom, keep your eyes trained for seahorses and various species of frogfish, including painted frogfish. This is also a consistent spot for pipefish and a variety of nudibranchs. The key here is patience and a slow pace, allowing your eyes to adjust to the camouflaged residents that blend almost perfectly with their surroundings.

While primarily a daytime macro dive, Seahorse Bay transforms after sunset. Night dives here unveil a different cast of characters, with decorators crabs emerging and a chance to spot leaf scorpionfish. The change in activity and the focused beam of a torch often reveal creatures like coconut octopuses and even the occasional mimic octopus, adding another dimension to the site’s already diverse macro offerings.

Visibility at Seahorse Bay is generally excellent, often allowing for clear views across the sandy expanse. This clarity, combined with calm waters, makes the site particularly suitable for underwater photography. The unhurried pace required for macro observation greatly benefits from these stable conditions, giving photographers ample time to compose shots of the many elusive critters inhabiting the site.

Despite its reputation as a calm and clear site, there are times when conditions can be less forgiving. While most describe the visibility as excellent, it's not unheard of to encounter periods of reduced clarity. The site's primary draw remains its rich macro life, offering encounters with species like flamboyant cuttlefish and ghost pipefish to those who take the time to scan the sandy bottom and seagrass patiently. However, some divers will find that the surrounding area of black sand can lead to reduced visibility.

While Seahorse Bay is celebrated as a muck diving and coral garden site, its distinct character lies in the specific conditions that support its unique macro fauna. The presence of both sandy areas and shallow coral gardens creates a diverse microhabitat, allowing for different species to coexist. Ribbon eels and various types of octopus are also found here, adding to the site's rich biodiversity for critter spotting.
