Secret Reef, Gili Meno: Coral Gardens and Drift Dives

Secret Reef lies in the channel between Gili Meno and Gili Air, making it a natural corridor for currents and marine life. The site typically begins around 10 to 12 metres, characterized by vibrant coral formations that range from delicate whip corals to extensive Acropora colonies and bright tubular sponges. This upper section forms a plateau that can be explored for a shallower dive, transitioning to a more sloping reef as you head deeper.

The reef gently slopes from its shallowest points, reaching depths of up to 35 metres. This topography allows for different dive profiles, whether you prefer to stay in the shallower, sunlit coral gardens or to descend along the slope. As you move along, the reef maintains its health, displaying a broad diversity of hard and soft corals that provide shelter and hunting grounds for resident fish populations.

Currents at Secret Reef can be light, allowing for a relaxed exploration of the coral topography, but they frequently pick up. When currents strengthen, especially during tide changes, the site transforms into a drift dive. These stronger currents bring in nutrient-rich water, supporting the vibrant ecosystem and offering an exhilarating ride past the sloping reef face without strenuous finning.

Within the corals, you will encounter diverse reef residents. Triggerfish patrol the edges, while clownfish find safety among anemones. Angelfish and pipefish are common sights, weaving through the intricate coral structures. Look closely inside the crevices and along the reef for these smaller inhabitants, as their behaviour is often adapted to the flow of water and availability of shelter.

Beyond the immediate reef, the site sometimes yields encounters with larger pelagic species. Keen eyes might spot stingrays gliding gracefully over the sandy patches adjacent to the reef. There is also the potential to see larger fish passing through the channel, such as the occasional humphead parrotfish or eagle ray, particularly when the current is running.

The site's unique blend of extensive coral coverage, varied depth, and dynamic current conditions distinguishes it. The health of the coral gardens, particularly the table corals, contributes to the site's rich biodiversity. These features make Secret Reef a rewarding destination for divers looking beyond a static reef profile, offering different experiences depending on the prevailing conditions on any given day.

Approaching the site often involves a descent directly onto the coral plateau, with the option to then turn to explore the deeper sections of the sloping wall. The varying depths and potential for drift dives mean that each visit can offer a different perspective of the reef system.
