Shallow Turbo, Gili Islands: Reef diving for every level

Shallow Turbo presents itself as a sloping reef and plateau dive, positioned off the northeast coast of Gili Trawangan. The site begins in shallower waters, making for a gentle entry and a gradual descent over varied terrain. As you follow the reef, the contours change, revealing a dynamic environment that provides plenty to explore without demanding excessive depth or complex navigation.

This site is characterized by an abundance of intricate coral formations that create a rich habitat. Moving along the reef, you’ll encounter large coral heads and areas of white sandy bottom. These varied terrains include small channels and expansive fields of garden eels (Heterocongrinae), adding distinct features to the underwater landscape as you progress through the dive.

The marine life at Shallow Turbo is diverse and frequently encountered. Expect to see significant schools of fusiliers and Redtooth Triggerfish (Odonus niger) moving across the reef crest. Giant barracudas (Sphyraena barracuda) are often present, along with long-jawed mackerel, creating an active environment with larger pelagic species. White-tip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus) are also observed patrolling the reef.

Numerous smaller reef inhabitants populate the corals. Moray eels (Muraenidae) are common, sheltering within the reef structure, and you’ll find clownfish (Amphiprioninae) in their anemones. Unicornfish (Naso unicornis), Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), and Trumpetfish (Aulostomidae) are also regularly sighted, alongside the distinct Starry Pufferfish (Arothron stellatus).

Turtles (Testudines) are a consistent presence at Shallow Turbo, often visible even in shallower sections, grazing on the corals or resting. Along with these larger residents, you’ll find various invertebrates, from diverse and colorful sponges to nudibranchs (Nudibranchia), which demand a slower pace and a keen eye to spot hidden within the reef.

The site experiences generally calm conditions, making it a comfortable drift dive along the reef. This characteristic, combined with the gradual slope, allows for relaxed exploration. The calm current typically guides you gently, enabling extended observation periods for macro life and giving you space to appreciate the broader reef structure and its inhabitants.

Shallow Turbo offers distinct areas where marine life congregates. The sandy patches between coral heads are often home to stingrays (Dasyatidae), while batfish (Ephippidae) school in the mid-water column. Jackfish (Carangidae) are also encountered, adding to the sense of an active and thriving ecosystem with predators and prey moving within their natural environment.

This site is particularly welcoming for training and less experienced divers due to its manageable depth and mild currents, while still offering enough complexity and variety for those with more dives. The blend of a shallow plateau and sloping reef creates a layered dive profile where different species can be found at various depths, catering to varied interests within a single dive.
