Saruenus Island (Pintu Arus), Kaimana: Drifting in Coral Gardens

Just a short five-minute boat ride from the resort, Saruenus Island, known locally as Pintu Arus or Pulau Arus, presents a distinct underwater topography. The most renowned section, Little Komodo, immediately impresses with its colossal rocks, heavily adorned in a vibrant tapestry of soft corals. These coral formations provide shelter for dense schools of fish, creating a lively foreground to your descent into the reef's structure.

As you move deeper along Saruenus Island, the underwater landscape shifts, revealing more intricate ecosystems. Here, beyond the soft coral-draped rocks, you'll find extensive bushes of black coral, serving as vital refuges for schooling snappers and groupers. These deeper zones often hold larger, resident fish, poised within the protective nooks and crannies of the reef, keeping a watchful eye on the passing current.

The resident fauna at Saruenus Island offers both broad biodiversity and fascinating specifics. Keep your eyes peeled for the flat bodies of Tasselled wobbegong sharks (Eucrossorhinus dasypogon) and Carpet sharks (Orectolobus), often camouflaged against the seabed or nestled amongst the corals. For those who appreciate the miniature, the site also hosts pygmy seahorses (Hippocampus bargibanti), vibrant nudibranchs, and various shrimp species, requiring a keen eye and a patient approach to spot them.

When conditions align, offering a favourable current, the opportunity arises for a thrilling drift along a soft coral wall, culminating your dive at a section known as Aquarium. This segment of the site is particularly rewarding in the morning, where the angle of the sun creates spectacular photographic opportunities, casting reflections across the water and illuminating the beautiful soft coral bommies teeming with schooling fish.

Beyond Aquarium, the possibilities expand, with one of the most exhilarating dives being the drift along the west side at Pintu Arus itself. This area is characterized by significantly stronger currents, transforming the dive into a dynamic experience where the reef rushes past. Here, the terraced reef slopes are carpeted in an almost unbroken expanse of soft coral gardens, creating a vivid, undulating landscape.

Navigating the currents at Pintu Arus, you'll gain a perspective on how marine life adapts to such conditions. Giant groupers (Epinephelus lanceolatus) are often observed, holding their position against the flow, while large schools of fusiliers and anthias engage in a constant, synchronized dance within the current.
