Max. depth · 25 mStep directly from the shore into a vibrant, sloping reef teeming with pygmy seahorses and elusive ribbon eels, a macro photographer's dream in North Sulawesi.
Diving Murex Bangka House Reef begins just a step off the beach, a direct entry into a dynamic underwater world. The reef immediately presents itself as a colourful slope, gradually descending towards a pristine white sand bottom. This gentle gradient allows for an unhurried exploration, giving you ample time to adjust and immediately immerse yourself in the rich topography of diverse corals and scattered bommies.
As you follow the slope downwards, the reef reveals its secrets. Coral formations provide intricate hiding spots and nurseries for a wide array of creatures. Keep a keen eye out for the delicate pygmy seahorses, masters of camouflage, clinging to sea fans. The vibrant blue ribbon eels often peer from their sandy burrows, their flowing forms a striking contrast to the reef's backdrop, creating a truly mesmerising encounter.
The sandy bottom is not without its residents either. Look closely for mantis shrimps, whose elaborate burrows dot the seafloor, or the cleverly camouflaged frogfish, often perfectly blending with their surroundings on the bommies. Cuttlefish and reef octopus are also frequent sightings, their intelligent eyes observing your presence before they subtly change colour and texture to vanish into the coral, challenging your observation skills.
Among the diverse invertebrates, the nudibranchs here are particularly varied, ranging in size and colour, adding small bursts of unexpected beauty to the reef. While you are focused on the macro life, maintain an awareness of the open water, as graceful eagle rays are known to glide past the reef, offering a momentary spectacle of larger marine fauna. The glass fish, shimmering in dense schools, often congregate around the more prominent coral structures, creating living curtains of silver.
This dive site is accessible to divers of all levels, offering a maximum depth of 25 metres. Visibility typically ranges from 10 to 25 metres, although this can be subject to local conditions. Currents are generally influenced by the tides, so conditions can vary. For optimal diving, the best period for this region is from the end of March until the end of November, coinciding with the driest season.
