The Lembeh Strait is a specialist's paradise, defined by its incredible variety of macro life. You can find an array of rare cephalopods, including the mimic octopus, wonderpus octopus, and the blue-ringed octopus. The sandy bottom is also home to various species of cuttlefish, such as the flamboyant cuttlefish, as well as the coconut octopus and the starry night octopus.

For those searching for more complex shapes, the area is famous for its frogfish and scorpionfish. You will encounter the hairy frogfish, the giant frogfish, the warty frogfish, and various Rhinopias. The silt also hides many smaller treasures, including pygmy seahorse (Hippocampus bargibanti), various ghost pipefish (Solenostomidae), and sea moths.

Crustaceans and other small invertebrates are abundant, with sightings of mantis shrimp, squat lobsters, and various types of crabs like the orangutan crab. Nudibranchs are a constant presence, with many rare species available for observation against the dark volcanic sand.

In the wider water column and around the reef structures, you may encounter larger residents. This includes various species of reef fish, groupers (Epinephelus), and occasionally more pelagic visitors such as sharks or rays, though the focus here remains firmly on the incredible biodiversity of the seabed.

The diving in the Lembeh Strait is generally characterised by low currents, making it an ideal location for the meticulous work required in macro photography. The water temperature remains warm throughout the year, typically ranging between 27°C and 30°C.
