Papua Paradise Eco Resort is situated on the pristine coastline of Birie Island in Raja Ampat, Indonesia. The resort is designed in a traditional style, consisting of 26 bungalows built on stilts that overlook the turquoise reef. It offers a remote environment where the sounds of the jungle and the waves define the atmosphere.

As a PADI Dive Resort, the centre provides a focused environment for those looking to explore the Raja Ampat archipelago. The location is protected from dominant winds, ensuring relatively stable conditions for diving and snorkeling. For those arriving from Sorong, a boat transfer is arranged to bring you directly to the island.

The diving operations are managed by Gangga Divers, a professional PADI Dive Resort led by international instructors. The team prioritises safety and maintains a guide-to-diver ratio of one instructor for every four divers. This ensures personalised attention during both reef dives and more specialised excursions.

The resort operates in English, French, and Italian, making it accessible for an international community of divers. The staff is integrated into the local community, supporting sustainable tourism practices throughout the region.

Gangga Divers offers a comprehensive range of PADI courses for all experience levels. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or work through the Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver certifications. The centre also provides training for the Rescue Diver and Emergency First Response courses.

For those looking to expand their technical skills or specialisations, the centre offers Enriched Air Diver, Deep Diver, Drift Diver, and Night Diving courses. There are also specialised programmes for Underwater Photography and Search & Recovery.

The resort operates a fleet of 10 fiberglass boats to reach the various dive sites of Raja Ampat. These vessels are used for daily dives, including morning, afternoon, and night sessions. For longer excursions, such as the trips to the Fam Islands or The Passage, the boats are equipped to handle full-day itineraries.

On board, you will find essential amenities including water, snacks, hot drinks, and fruit. The boats are also equipped for photography enthusiasts, providing padded camera cases and freshwater for rinsing equipment. Safety gear, including life jackets, VHF radio, and an oxygen kit, is standard on all vessels.

The centre provides full equipment hire for divers needing a complete rig. For those who prefer to bring their own kit, the resort offers various amenities to support your stay. The dive centre is equipped with oxygen and a first aid kit for safety.

Photography-specific kit is supported on-site, with dedicated storage and rinsing facilities available. While the resort provides a comprehensive range of diving equipment, divers should note that gloves are not permitted during dives in this area.

The reefs surrounding Birie Island are home to a vast array of marine life, including reef sharks such as the blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) and whitetip reef shark (Triaenodon obesus). You will frequently encounter large schools of fish, including fusiliers (Caesio), snappers (Lutjanus), and various jacks (Carangidae). Larger pelagic species like tuna (Thunnus) and trevally are also present in the area.

The coral architecture is a major highlight, featuring a mix of hard coral (Scleractinia) and soft coral (Alcyonacea), including sea fans (Gorgoniidae). These structures support a massive diversity of reef fish, from the Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) and humphead parrotfish (Bolbometopon) to various species of butterflyfish (Chaetodon) and angelfish (Pomacanthidae).

For macro enthusiasts, the area offers incredible opportunities to find pygmy seahorse (Hippocampus bargibanti), nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), and various species of shrimp (Caridea) and crabs (Brachyura). You may also spot the wobbegong shark, flamboyant cuttlefish, and various species of pipefish.

During the manta season, which includes the months of June to August, there are opportunities to see reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi). Other significant residents include green turtle (Cheloniidae), various species of moray eel (Muraenidae), and the wobbegong shark.

Diving in Raja Ampat is influenced by predictable tidal currents. The area is generally well-protected from heavy swell due to the location of Birie Island, providing relatively calm surface conditions. The currents are often linked to the tides, which is a key consideration for drift diving.

Conditions remain stable throughout the year, though the months of June to August are considered the low season. During this period, plankton blooms may occur, which can attract a higher concentration of marine life.
