Sampaguita about the site

Sampaguita marks the southern boundary of the Tongo dive site, transitioning into a recognized marine sanctuary. The dive begins on a reef top, typically between 5 and 10 meters, rich in hard corals. This shallower section serves as a bustling habitat for various reef fish and is where you frequently encounter sea turtles (Chelonioidea) grazing, often unperturbed by divers.

As you move away from the reef crest, the topography shifts dramatically to a steep wall. This wall descends into the blue, characterized by a series of impressive overhangs and ledges that provide shelter for a range of marine life. Along these vertical faces, you'll observe sea snakes (Hydrophiinae) weaving through crevices and schools of barracudas (Sphyraena) occasionally patrolling the open water just off the wall.

The wall itself is dotted with intricate features, sometimes interrupted by sandy sections that collect debris and attract bottom dwellers. Look closely within the crevices and under the overhangs for scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae) and various pufferfish (Tetraodontidae). The soft corals (Alcyonacea) growing on the wall host smaller, cryptic species such as ghost pipefish (Solenostomidae) and different types of shrimp (Caridea), often requiring a keen eye to spot.

Pelagic action at Sampaguita can be a highlight, with schools of batfish (Platax) occasionally encountered in the mid-water column. While not guaranteed, the site has a reputation for attracting larger visitors, including whale sharks (Rhincodon typus), particularly at certain times of the year, making a careful scan into the blue an integral part of the dive profile here.

The transition from the sun-drenched reef top to the deeper, shaded wall creates distinct ecological zones, each with its own community. This varied environment supports everything from macro life hidden in sponge gardens to larger species cruising along the current. Maintaining good buoyancy control is key, especially along the wall, to avoid damaging the delicate coral formations and to fully appreciate the smaller inhabitants.

Diving conditions

This site is accessible for divers certified at Open Water Diver level. Visibility is generally excellent, often reaching 30 meters. While currents are typically mild, they can sometimes pick up, especially around the points or during tide changes, so be prepared to hold your position on the wall. Maximum depth suitable for recreational diving extends beyond 30 meters, primarily along the wall.
