Blue Marlin Dive Gili Air

Located on the peaceful beachfront of Gili Air, far from the noise of the main harbour, Blue Marlin Dive provides a calm environment for both learning and exploration. Since 1990, the centre has been a staple of the local diving community, offering a gateway to the diverse underwater landscapes of Gili Air, Gili Meno, and Gili Trawangan.

The surrounding waters are defined by a mix of environments, from shallow coral gardens and seagrass meadows to deeper reef slopes and significant wreck sites. Whether you are looking for a relaxed reef cruise or a more challenging drift dive, the local topography offers something for every certification level.

The centre is a PADI 5 Star IDC Centre, making it a primary destination for those looking to progress through the professional levels of diving. With seven instructors on staff, the team is equipped to handle a wide range of training requirements and recreational diving needs.

For those pursuing a career in diving, the centre offers Instructor Development Courses (IDC) and boasts a 100% pass rate for candidates. The instructors are experienced and multilingual, ensuring that training is clear and accessible for international divers.

The course catalogue is extensive, catering to every stage of a diver's journey. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Bubblemaker programme, progressing through to the PADI Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver certifications.

For more experienced divers, the centre offers specialised training including PADI Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, and Nitrox courses. They also provide professional training paths such as Divemaster Training and the full Instructor Development Course (IDC).

Beyond standard certifications, the centre offers niche educational programmes including Shark studies, Turtle studies, Nudibranch studies, and Artificial Reef Theory and Techniques. Emergency First Response (EFR) training is also available to ensure divers are prepared for any situation.

The reefs are teeming with a vast array of colourful tropical reef fish, including Angelfish (Pomacanthidae), Damselfish (Chromis chromis), and various species of Butterflyfish (Chaetodon). You will frequently encounter larger residents such as Groupers (Epinephelus), Snapper (Lutjanus), and Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus) near the ledges and coral structures.

Large pelagic visitors and sharks are a regular highlight, with Whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus), blacktip reef sharks, and occasional leopard sharks appearing on the deeper slopes. You may also spot stingrays, eagle rays (Aetobatus), and various species of rays (Batoidea) cruising the sandy patches.

Sea turtles are a constant presence in these waters, with Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) often found feeding on seagrass or navigating the reef.

For macro enthusiasts, the area is exceptional. The sandy bottoms and coral rubble host a wealth of small creatures, including Seahorse (Hippocampus kuda), Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), and various species of Frogfish (Antennarius). Look closely around the rocks and crevices for scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), pipefish, garden eels (Gorgasia), and flamboyant cuttlefish, as well as various species of octopus and mimic octopus.

The diving environment in the Gilis varies by site; some locations, such as Shark Point and Secret Reef, are known for stronger currents that are well-suited for drift diving. Other sites, like Turtle Heaven or Hans Reef, offer much calmer, shallower conditions.

Night diving is a regular part of the local diving experience, particularly at sites like Meno Wall, where the nocturnal marine life becomes active, and Mandarin Reef, which is visited specifically to observe the Mandarin Fish.
