Turtle Heaven, Gili Trawangan: Encountering Reef Life

Dropping into Turtle Heaven, you immediately encounter a shallow coral plateau that provides a safe and inviting start to your dive. This initial section, sitting at a comfortable 10 metres, is perfect for new divers to orient themselves. Here, the sheer abundance of turtles (Chelonia mydas, Eretmochelys imbricata, Dermochelys coriacea, Caretta caretta, Lepidochelys olivacea, Natator depressus) that give this site its name becomes apparent, as they graze among the soft corals and fan through the water with an unhurried grace. The name of the site truly speaks for itself, and you'll find yourself mesmerized by their presence almost immediately.

As you move beyond the plateau, the reef gently transitions into a sloping expanse, guiding you towards the deeper sections of the site. This slope is home to various coral formations, providing shelter and hunting grounds for a diverse range of marine life. Following this natural pathway, you will soon arrive at a prominent pinnacle, its peak still within sight of the shallower plateau. This unique structure acts as a focal point, drawing in a variety of species and creating a vivid backdrop for your underwater exploration as you continue along its contours.

The pinnacle itself is a world apart, creating a mini-ecosystem within the larger reef structure. Its summit, at 10 metres, is bathed in sunlight, vibrant with corals. As you round this natural landmark, the slope continues downwards, eventually reaching around 20 metres at its base. This deeper section of the site reveals a more mysterious side, where you might spot species like the subtle sea snakes (Hydrophiinae) weaving through the nooks, or the captivating, yet venomous, lionfish (Pterois) in their characteristic predatory displays. Look closely amidst the crevices, and you might even discover the camouflaged scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae) that blend seamlessly into their surroundings.
