Dune Penida

Located in the heart of the Coral Triangle, Nusa Penida is a premier destination for divers seeking high-energy environments and significant marine life. Dune Penida has been a fixture of this region since 1997, providing access to the area's famous currents and spectacular underwater topography.

The centre operates across two distinct locations to suit your needs. You can head directly to the dive shop at Toyapakeh port for daily departures, or retreat to the Dive Resort situated on a hill above the Warnakali Resort in Sakti. The resort offers a more tranquil setting with an infinity pool and panoramic ocean views, ideal for resting between dives.

As a PADI 5 Star IDC Center and a designated PADI Eco Center, Dune Penida maintains high standards of professional instruction and environmental stewardship. The centre holds Green Fins Silver status, reflecting a long-term commitment to marine conservation through partnerships with the Coral Triangle Center and the Marine Megafauna Foundation.

Training is conducted in a professional environment, including an air-conditioned classroom with views of Mount Agung. The team is geared towards providing high-quality education for both recreational divers and those pursuing professional PADI career progression.

Dune Penida offers a comprehensive range of PADI courses catering to all levels of experience. Beginners can start their journey with the Open Water Diver course, while more experienced divers can pursue advanced certifications and specialty training.

The centre is also an IDC center, meaning they are equipped to provide professional-level training for those looking to advance their careers through PADI Pro courses.

The centre utilises a fleet of five speedboats to reach more than 20 dive sites around Nusa Penida and the neighbouring islands. These vessels are designed to move efficiently between locations, allowing for a schedule that typically includes three dives per day.

These trips cover a wide range of environments, from sheltered, shallow bays to exhilarating drift dives along vertical walls that descend to depths of over 200 metres.

The nutrient-rich waters of Nusa Penida are famous for attracting large pelagic species. You can expect to see Manta ray (Mobula alfredi) throughout the year, alongside various schooling reef fish, turtles, and large schools of Jacks (Carangidae). During certain seasons, the area becomes a prime location for spotting the ocean sunfish (mola mola).

For those interested in larger predators, the area is home to reef sharks, including the Whitetip reef shark (Triaenodon obesus) and the Blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus). You may also encounter much larger pelagics such as Dogtooth tuna (Gymnosarda unicolor), trevally, and various species of barracuda.

The reef itself is a vibrant ecosystem composed of Hard coral (Scleractinia), Soft coral (Alcyonacea), and various Sponges (Porifera). These structures support a massive variety of life, from the Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) to colourful reef fish like Butterflyfish (Chaetodon) and Parrotfish (Calotomus).

Macro enthusiasts will find plenty to explore in the smaller corners of the reef. The environment is rich with Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), various species of shrimp, mantis shrimp, and scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae). You can also look for octopus, frogfish (Antennarius), and various crabs (Brachyura) among the corals.

Divers should be prepared for the unique challenges of the Nusa Penida region, which is known for its powerful currents. These currents are a primary driver of the area's incredible biodiversity but require confident buoyancy control and experience.

The underwater topography is diverse, ranging from protected shallow bays to dramatic walls that drop vertically to depths exceeding 200 metres.
