The waters around Nusa Penida are famous for large pelagics. You can regularly encounter Manta ray (Mobula alfredi) and various species of turtles, including Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). During specific seasons, the ocean sunfish (Mola Mola) also makes appearances.

Reef life is abundant and diverse. You will see plenty of reef fish, including various species of snapper (Lutjanus), triggerfish (Balistidae), and butterflyfish (Chaetodon). Schools of jacks (Carangidae) and trevally often move through the water column, while reef sharks such as Whitetip reef shark (Triaenodon obesus) and Blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) can be spotted patrolling the area.

For those interested in macro life and smaller inhabitants, the reef holds many treasures. Look closely for nudibranchs, mantis shrimp (Stomatopoda), and various species of scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae). You may also find frogfish (Antennariidae), moray eels (Muraenidae), and various crabs (Brachyura) amongst the reef structure.

The seabed is built upon a foundation of diverse hard coral (Scleractinia) and soft coral (Alcyonacea), providing essential habitat for sponges (Porifera) and a vast array of small invertebrates.
