Buyuk, Nusa Lembongan: drift along coral slopes

Buyuk sits on the northern coast of Nusa Lembongan, characterized by long, sloping coral reefs that make for a classic drift dive. You start your descent over sandy slopes dotted with coral bommies and sponges, providing shelter for various macro marine life. This initial section, typically accessed around 5 to 10 meters, serves as a nursery for smaller reef fish and provides space for turtles to graze.

As you move deeper, the topography transitions into more continuous coral gardens. These slopes are covered with both hard and soft corals, creating a rich habitat that attracts numerous reef fish. The profile here allows for a gradual descent, opening up different depths to explore the reef’s diversity. Visibility at Buyuk typically ranges between 20 and 35 meters, offering clear views of the expansive coral formations.

The dive continues along these slopes, where you'll find resident populations of pufferfish hidden among the coral patches. Keep an eye out for turtles, which are frequent visitors to this area, often seen foraging or resting. The gentle slope allows you to cover a significant distance with minimal effort when the current is mild.

Moving towards the deeper sections, particularly between 20 and 30 meters, you increase your chances of spotting pelagic species. Blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus) and whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus) cruise along the reef edge, while tuna and barracudas (Sphyraena jello) can be seen further out in the blue. These deeper zones present a different dynamic than the shallower areas, often with the current becoming more pronounced.

Below 30 meters, the slope extends further, with whispered accounts of thresher shark (Alopias vulpinus) cleaning stations around the 40-meter mark.
