Camping Les Sables Blancs

Camping Les Sables Blancs is for divers who would rather have a proper base than a conventional hotel room. You get a self-catering mobile home, your own terrace and barbecue, plus the useful freedom to eat in, eat out or do neither without having to dress for dinner every night.

The feel is practical and outdoorsy, with the beach, a heated pool and a covered adults-only spa pool all part of the daily choice. English, French, German, Spanish and Italian are spoken by the hotel team, so you can sort out the useful details in English without resorting to underwater sign language.

You are in Concarneau, in Brittany, at 17 avenue du Dorlet. The fine-sand Plage Sables Blancs is 150 metres away, and the campsite sits close enough to the sea for a quick walk in flip-flops rather than a logistical operation involving the car.

Concarneau town centre is about a 15-minute walk, with shops available within a five-minute walk. The historic Remparts de la Ville Close are around 1 mile away, while Château de Kériolet is about 2 miles from the property. Plage Cornouaille is roughly 0.4 miles away on foot, and Plage Kernous is about 0.9 miles away.

The Concarneau railway station is about 0.8 miles away on foot. By car, Lorient South Brittany Airport is around 30 miles away, and Brest Bretagne Airport is about 57 miles away.

These are mobile homes rather than hotel rooms, which changes the evening routine in a useful way. You have a kitchenette with a hob, microwave, refrigerator, coffee machine, kitchenware and dining table, so you can keep drinks cold, make coffee before an early start and deal with the post-dive appetite without waiting for restaurant service.

Choose a home with a terrace if outdoor space matters to you; the terrace comes with outdoor furniture and barbecue facilities. Inside, there is a seating area with a sofa, a private shower room and storage for clothes. Heating is available, along with a television, WiFi and a drying rack for clothing when the Breton weather has had its say.

The larger mobile homes suit families or groups who want to share a base, while the smaller option makes more sense for a couple who would rather not rattle around in unused space. All the accommodation is non-smoking, and pets are welcome.

Le Dorlett handles dinner on site, with a sea view, an open-air terrace and an à la carte menu built around local cooking and pizzas. Service starts at 18:00, which is a sensible hour if your day has involved boats, kit and a healthy amount of saltwater.

There is one on-site bar, as well as a snack bar, so you can keep the evening uncomplicated when cooking feels like an unreasonable demand. Homemade pizzas are also available to take away. No breakfast or board package is offered as part of the accommodation details, so mornings are best approached through the mobile home's coffee machine and kitchenette, or with a walk into town.

The heated outdoor swimming pool gives you an easy way to spend a non-diving afternoon, with the sea still in view. For a quieter reset, the covered adults-only spa pool also looks out towards the water and sits alongside a spa offering massages, facials, hammam, sauna, jacuzzi, mud baths and body wraps.

If your legs still want a job, you can cycle, hire a bicycle, walk, play table tennis or take on the billiards table. Kayaking and boat trips are available too, while the beach is close enough for a change of scenery without turning it into an expedition.

There are outdoor fitness facilities, evening entertainment and indoor and outdoor play areas for younger travellers. Sun loungers and parasols are available around the pool and beach areas, leaving you with the rare luxury of choosing between doing something and making a very firm decision not to.

Arrival is between 16:00 and 19:00, and you need to give the property your expected arrival time in advance. Departure is between 09:00 and 10:00, so the final morning is an early one by holiday standards. Private parking is free on site and does not need to be reserved.

WiFi is available throughout the campsite at no extra charge. Laundry facilities are available, and the on-site minimarket is useful for the forgotten essentials or the ingredients that did not survive the journey. Visa, Mastercard and cash are accepted.

Children of any age are welcome, with cots available on request for young children; extra beds are not available. Pets are welcome, smoking is not allowed, and quiet hours run from 22:00 to 08:00. Parties and similar events are not permitted.
