Residenza L'Alivetu is an aparthotel on the Corsican coast, built for days that do not need much ceremony: a swim, a meal outside, a drive along the coast and a proper kitchen when you would rather not dress up for dinner. The residence has welcomed guests since 1994 and sits between the sea and the maquis, with apartments arranged on a hillside above Cargèse.

You get the useful middle ground between a hotel room and a rented house. There is an outdoor infinity pool with sea views, private outdoor space for every apartment and enough kitchen equipment to handle breakfast, a picnic or a simple supper. English, French, Italian and Spanish are spoken by the hotel team, which makes the practical conversations easier when your day has involved more salt water than vocabulary.

This suits you if you want the independence of an apartment without giving up a pool, views and a partner restaurant nearby. Couples can keep things simple in a studio; families or groups have larger apartments with separate bedrooms and more room to spread out.

The residence is in Menasina, on the hillside between Cargèse and the coast, in the Cargèse area of Corsica. Menasina beach is about 0.3 miles away, and the residence places the walk at two minutes. You are close enough to reach the water on foot, but high enough for the setting to look out over the sea rather than sit directly on the sand.

Cargèse village is about 2 miles away, so a car is useful for evening meals, provisions and exploring beyond the residence. Restaurants in and around Cargèse include U Tragulinu Cargèse at roughly 1 mile, with Le Serenu and Epicerie Leca around 1.2 miles away. There is free private parking on site, which matters in Corsica when the day's plan involves more than one beach or a long coastal road.

The Calanques de Piana are about a 25-minute drive away. The residence also places you within reach of the Scandola reserve, the forest of Altone and Cargèse itself, making this a practical base for combining sea days with some of the island's more celebrated scenery.

These are apartments rather than rooms with a kettle pretending to be a kitchen. Every unit has a fully equipped kitchenette with a hob, microwave, refrigerator, toaster, kettle, kitchenware and a dining table. After a long day outdoors, that means cold water from the fridge, food on a real table and no need to build a meal around whatever survives in the hotel minibar.

The studio is the straightforward couple's choice, with a double bed and a compact layout. If you want a proper living area and more room to settle in, the one-bedroom apartment is the more comfortable step up; the two-bedroom apartment is the sensible option when several adults are travelling together and nobody wants to negotiate sleeping arrangements over dinner. Family rooms are available, and one ground-floor arrangement caters for guests looking for easier access.

All apartments look towards the sea or the garden. Depending on the unit, you get a private balcony or a garden, while every apartment has outside seating and an outdoor dining area. Air conditioning helps take the edge off warm Corsican nights, and soundproofing, a private entrance, wardrobe space and a drying rack keep the practical business of a stay reasonably contained. Each apartment also has a private bathroom with a shower, toilet, towels and hairdryer.

Breakfast is continental, and you can have it in your room rather than joining a communal morning performance before you are ready to speak. The apartments' dining areas and outdoor seating also let you put the kitchenette to work when a slower breakfast suits the day better.

There is a bar at the residence, but the main evening solution is the partner restaurant in the centre of the village, about 2 miles away. Guests booking half-board or full-board arrangements receive discounted rates there, so dinner can be part of the stay rather than another decision to make when you are tired and hungry.

The shared barbecue gives you a second option for eating outdoors. It is a useful arrangement for an apartment residence: pick up what you need in Cargèse, keep the cooking uncomplicated and take the meal outside while the sea view does the decorative work.

The outdoor infinity pool is the obvious place to reset, with a sea view rather than a tiled wall for company. Sun loungers, beach chairs, umbrellas and a sun terrace give you somewhere to settle with a book, a drink or the particular expression worn by anyone who has spent the day in fins. The pool is fenced, and an open-air bath is also available.

The garden and picnic area add space beyond the apartments, with outdoor furniture and terraces for sitting out. There is no need to turn every afternoon into an organised activity; here, the useful choice is between the pool, the garden and the short trip down to Menasina beach.

For a day away from the water, excursions can take you towards Scandola, the Calanques de Piana, the forest of Altone or Cargèse. Those options work well for a couple travelling together, especially when one of you wants a change of scenery and the other has had enough of being horizontal in the sea for one day.

Ajaccio Napoléon Bonaparte Airport is about 29 miles away by road, with the drive taking around 46 minutes. Calvi–Sainte-Catherine Airport is farther, at about 61 miles by road. Free private parking is available on site, with no reservation needed, so arriving by hire car is the uncomplicated option for reaching the residence and moving around the coast.

Check-in runs from 17:00 to 20:00, and you need to tell the property your expected arrival time. Check-out is from 08:00 to 10:00. The balance is due at check-in, and cash is accepted. Private and express check-in and check-out are available.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and laundry facilities are available. Pets are welcome. Smoking is not allowed, children of any age can stay, cots can be requested for children aged up to two, and there are no extra beds.
