European Diving School

European Diving School has been a fixture of the Mediterranean diving scene for over three decades. Established in 1986, the centre operates from two primary bases on the Côte d'Azur: Hyères, located on the Giens peninsula, and Saint-Tropez in the Bay of Pampelonne.

This dual-base setup allows you to choose between the protected, high-biodiversity waters of the Port-Cros National Park near Hyères, or the historic wreck sites closer to Saint-Tropez. Whether you are looking for a relaxed reef dive or a deep technical exploration, the centre's long-standing presence ensures a professional approach to every outing.

The centre is built on a foundation of deep local knowledge, with much of the staff trained in-house to ensure they know every nook and cranny of the local sites. They are affiliated with both PADI and CMAS, offering a versatile range of certification pathways for all types of divers.

Communication is seamless for international visitors, as the team is multilingual, speaking French, English, German, and Spanish. This makes the training process smooth, whether you are completing your first Open Water Diver course or working towards an Instructor Development Course (IDC).

The training programme is exceptionally broad, spanning the entire spectrum of scuba diving. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or progress through the PADI Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver courses. The centre also offers the PADI Scuba Review for those looking to refresh their skills.

For those looking to specialise, there is a comprehensive list of PADI and CMAS courses, including Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, Navigation, Drift Diver, and Peak Performance Buoyancy. Professional divers can also train here through the Divemaster and IDC programmes. Technical and advanced training is also supported, with Nitrox, Trimix, and CMAS 2* or 3* levels available.

The centre operates its own fleet of boats to ensure quick and reliable access to the best dive sites in the region. These vessels allow you to reach the offshore reefs and deep wrecks with ease, minimizing transit time and maximising your bottom time.

For those looking to explore deeper or more technical sites, Nitrox and Trimix are available on board. The boats are well-equipped to handle various dive profiles, from shallow reef explorations to more demanding wreck penetrations.

A full range of rental kit is available on-site, meaning you can travel light and rely on professional equipment for your dives. This includes everything from regulators and BCDs to fins and masks.

For night dives, the centre provides torches to ensure you can navigate the seabed and observe the nocturnal marine life safely. The facility is designed to be a one-stop shop for your diving needs, from initial training through to technical gas support.

The Mediterranean reefs around Hyères and Saint-Tropez are incredibly biodiverse. You will regularly encounter large groupers (Epinephelus), barracudas (Sphyraena barracuda), and various species of moray eels (Muraenidae). Schools of common dentex (Dentex dentex) and sea bream (Sparidae) are common sights along the rocky walls and canyons.

For those interested in macro life, the sites offer plenty to see. Keep an eye out for colorful nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), various species of octopus, and different types of shrimp (Caridea). Scorpionfish and various crustaceans, including spiny lobster (Palinuridae), are frequently found tucked into the crevices of the reefs.

The seafloor is beautifully decorated with red gorgonians (Gorgoniidae), sea fans (Gorgoniidae), and various sponges (Porifera). These fixed organisms provide the essential structure for the local ecosystem, creating vibrant habitats for smaller inhabitants like crabs (Brachyura) and sea anemones (Actiniaria).

Diving in this region is subject to varying conditions depending on the site. While many reef sites offer calm, sheltered environments, certain wreck dives and rocky outcrops, such as La Grande Quairolle, can experience moderate to strong currents.

Seasonal planning is important, as the centre's primary operating windows are from May to October, with the Saint-Tropez base typically operating from mid-May to October. The Hyères base remains active through late October.
