Le Trafik Wreck: Deep Diving in Cavalaire Waters

Le Trafik, a cargo ship of 35 to 40 metres, lies upright on a sandy bottom at depths ranging from 52 to 60 metres. The wreck is situated near a steep wall that drops to over 80 metres, a geographic feature contributing to the dynamic conditions of the site. Its condition suggests a history beyond a standard sinking; the absence of a mast and propeller leads to speculation of a voluntary scuttling, a tow gone wrong, or even a collision with a mine early last century.

The bow of the vessel rests at 59 metres, while the stern rises to 53 metres, offering a distinct dive profile that lets you explore different sections. The main winch is still intact and visible, along with multiple anchor points, retaining many details of its past operational life. While the forward hold is sealed, the aft hold lies open, providing a glimpse into the ship's interior, though it has been emptied over time.

One of the defining features of Le Trafik is the dense growth on its western side, where gorgonians have firmly anchored themselves to the wreck structure. Amidst this growth, you will find Diadema urchins, adding to the invertebrate life that colonises the structure. The interplay of light filtering down to these depths highlights the vibrant colours of the gorgonians and the stark lines of the wreck.

Beyond the structure itself, the surrounding environment of Le Trafik supports notable marine life. You may encounter common residents such as tacauds, groupers (Mérous), moray eels (Murènes), and conger eels (Congres) seeking shelter within or around the wreck. Lobsters are also present, often tucked into crevices, while larger fish (Grands poissons) patrol the deeper waters surrounding the site.

Visibility at the site is generally excellent, enhancing the experience of diving a deep wreck. The clarity allows for a comprehensive view of the entire ship from a distance, making navigation and observation easier even at these depths. However, the often strong currents are a significant factor here, requiring precise dive planning and situational awareness throughout the dive.
