Hotel Club Marina Viva

You come here for a resort stay with the sea doing much of the scenery work. Marina Viva sits on a 10-hectare estate planted with pines, eucalyptus, mimosas and palms, with direct access to a broad fine-sand beach. It is a practical choice if you want diving in the day but plenty happening around the hotel once the kit is put away.

The place suits couples, families and divers who prefer a self-contained base rather than a small guesthouse where the evening entertainment is deciding whether to have another beer. You can choose between accommodation-only and full-board arrangements, with breakfast, half-board and full-board options also available. English and French are spoken by the hotel team, so you can deal with the useful things without resorting to hand signals.

The resort has 498 units in all, including rooms in low Mediterranean-style buildings and apartments set in the wooded grounds. The atmosphere is organised and sociable, with daily activities, evening entertainment and enough space to spread the day out beyond the dive schedule.

You are in Porticcio, Corsica, on the shore of the Gulf of Ajaccio. The estate faces a long sandy beach and the hotel has direct access to it, with sun loungers, parasols, showers and a beach bar available by the water. The bay combines stretches of golden sand with smaller coves, so a non-diving morning does not require a complicated expedition.

Ajaccio is around 6.2 miles away, with its port about 17 minutes from the resort. The city gives you access to historic sights including the Citadel, the Imperial Chapel and the Cathedral of the Assumption, all roughly four miles away. A car is available for hire at the resort, and free private parking makes bringing or hiring one a straightforward option.

Ajaccio Napoléon Bonaparte Airport is about 12 minutes away by car. Campo Dell'Oro railway station is around 2.4 miles away, while Ricanto station is about 2.9 miles away. For a meal away from the resort, Le Bistrot Corse is around 0.1 mile away, with La Gelât and Restaurant a Bona Stella la Viva Porticcio roughly 0.2 mile away.

French doors open onto a private balcony or terrace, giving you somewhere to sit with a coffee, dry off in the sun or simply stop looking at a screen. Every room has air conditioning, a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom with shower, toilet and hairdryer. The rooms are non-smoking, and the balcony is the useful extra here: not glamorous nonsense, just a place to get outside without leaving your accommodation.

For two people, a Superior Double or Twin Room keeps things simple. If you are travelling with a third person, the Superior Triple Room uses two single beds and a sofa bed, which is more workable than pretending that three adults enjoy sharing one sleeping arrangement. The two adjacent double rooms are the sensible family or small-group choice, with separate rooms rather than one crowded space; they are adjacent but not connecting.

The estate also has apartments in the wooded grounds, while the hotel rooms are arranged in small two- or three-storey buildings. You can therefore choose between a compact room for a couple or solo trip and a larger arrangement for family or friends. Air conditioning matters when the Corsican heat has followed you back from the water, and the private bathroom means the return from the beach does not have to be choreographed around everyone else.

The main restaurant covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a continental buffet in the morning and varied buffet meals through the day. Its setting is on the seafront, with panoramic views across the Bay of Ajaccio, while the cooking draws on Mediterranean and Corsican flavours. Evening buffets have a different theme each night, including a regional evening with Corsican specialities.

That gives you a useful choice after diving: eat at the resort without another drive, or use the buffet as a base before heading out for an excursion. Local and organic produce from local farming is used, and packed lunches are available for days when the schedule takes you away from the table. Some excursions also include tastings of Corsican charcuterie, cheese and wine.

The Grill Restaurant moves dinner outdoors in July and August, serving barbecue dishes on a terrace overlooking the Gulf of Ajaccio on selected evenings. There is one named bar, U Paradisu, on a terrace around the fountain, serving cocktails and ice creams throughout the day and into the evening. Around the pool, the snack service runs from 11:00 to 17:00 in July and August, which is the right sort of timing for anyone who prefers lunch to remain uncomplicated.

The swimming pool has a sun terrace, and the estate also gives you direct access to the beach with loungers and parasols. If the plan is to spend an afternoon horizontal, there is no shortage of places to do it. The wellness offering includes massages and body treatments, while the fitness facilities are backed by daily activities such as aquagym, step, dance and general fitness from Sunday to Friday.

For something more active, you have three tennis courts, tennis equipment, table tennis, darts, billiards, pétanque, volleyball, beach volleyball and water polo. Kayaking, sailing, jet skiing, fishing, flyboarding and pedal boats are among the water-based options, with snorkelling and boat excursions also available. Canyoning, horse riding, buggy outings and hiking give you alternatives once the sea has had enough of your attention.

The resort also organises cultural and island excursions, including Ajaccio, the Sanguinaires Islands, Bonifacio, Corte, the Scandola Nature Reserve, Girolata and the Calanques de Piana. Evenings can involve cabaret, musical comedy, café theatre, dancing or Corsican singing. Families have children’s clubs for ages 3 to 10.99 and a teenagers’ club for ages 11 to 17.99 during French school holidays, with activities ranging from sport and sailing to cooking, treasure hunts and wildlife observation.

Check-in starts from 16:00 and check-out runs until 10:00. There is no age requirement for checking in, and children of any age are welcome. Cots for children aged 0 to 2 can be requested, subject to the selected accommodation and availability; extra beds are not available. Pets are not allowed, and cash is accepted for payment.

You can reach the resort by airport shuttle, arranged in advance with the hotel; the service requires booking one week ahead. The front desk is open 24 hours, with luggage storage, a tour desk and a safety deposit box available. Free WiFi is available in the public areas, while free private parking is available on site according to availability.

The property is adapted for guests with reduced mobility. Its private car park includes four electric-vehicle charging points. You can also use the resort’s car-rental service, which is useful for reaching Ajaccio, the island’s excursions and the beaches around the bay without turning every outing into a logistics exercise.

Marina Viva carries the European RISPETTU label and was among the ten pioneering hotels involved in the RISPETTU sustainable-development project. The approach covers reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions, water and energy consumption, and waste.

The resort also buys local and organic products from local agriculture, measures its environmental impacts and communicates them to guests. That puts the environmental policy alongside the everyday running of the hotel rather than leaving it as a decorative paragraph: what you eat, what the resort consumes and how its impact is followed are all part of the same programme.
