Kubu Reefs, Bali: Shore Dive and Coral Gardens

Kubu Reefs offers direct shore access from a paved road, a short 10-minute drive northwest from Tulamben. The dive begins with a short swim over a picturesque shallow reef, where colossal coral pinnacles burst with life, often swathed in shimmering schools of glassfish. These vibrant structures create dynamic living walls of silver movement against the coral backdrop, initiating the dive in a rich, inviting environment.

From this entry point, divers can choose between two main paths. One leads to a 'left' site, characterized by delicate branching corals that transition into sizable barrel sponges and large gorgonian fans beyond the initial coral garden. The other option ventures slightly to the 'right,' where extensive coral-covered rocks and bommies define the shallower sections before giving way to a richly overgrown ridge, creating varied ecosystems for exploration.

The reef’s structure, with its gradual slope, intricately designed coral architecture, and expansive fields of staghorn and soft corals, creates optimal habitat for both macro and larger marine life. Here you can find unique species expert at camouflage, alongside the delicate porcelain crabs that cling to anemones. The reef continues as a gentle slope that extends to its deepest point at 24 metres.

While the site thrives with macro subjects like diverse nudibranchs and sea slugs, the broader faunal community is equally engaging. Look for reef fish darting across the corals, and impressive schools of barracudas cruising the blue. Various groupers, juvenile batfish, and moray eels, including the distinctive ribbon moray, are frequently observed hiding in crevices and overhangs. Keep an eye on larger barrel sponges, as they frequently host lionfish.

Beyond the natural beauty, an artificial reef structure blends into the coral fingers extending from shore, providing additional habitats. This blend of natural and artificial structures enhances the site's biodiversity, offering varied exploration for macro enthusiasts and wide-angle photographers alike. Around the artificial reef and anemones, you can find various shrimp species and clownfish.

Pelagic encounters, though not the primary focus, are not uncommon. Sharks and barracudas may patrol the deeper water, often where the reef drops off into the sand. You might also encounter schools of snappers, trevallies, and occasional thons around the deeper edges, adding an element of surprise to your dive.

The conditions at Kubu Reefs are generally favorable for exploration, offering clear views of the intricate coral ecosystems and myriad creatures. While currents are typically moderate, particularly along the ridge, they generally make for a relaxed dive. The excellent visibility allows for full appreciation of the site's extensive coral health and diverse fish populations.
